Job Description

The School of Medicine - Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is seeking a highly motivated, engaged, and committed Medical Illustrator who is interested in joining a fast-paced, highly productive team.

Our Orthopaedic service talent teams include: Attending Physicians, Fellow/Resident Physicians, Extender Practitioners, Nurses, ATC/OTCs, Clinical Administrative Coordinators, Research Faculty, Research Technical Teams, and Students. Our clinicians have clinical locations in Columbia, Jefferson City, Boonville, Liberty, and Springfield. The ideal candidate will play an instrumental role in the success of sustaining our department's mission: advance the clinical, research and teaching components of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Missouri.

This position will partner with departmental staff to support the overall culture and advancement of the Missouri Orthopaedic Institute and C3 Orthopaedics Initiative (Comprehensive, Cutting Edge, Caring Culture), which fosters a fast learning and continuously improving organization to further our mission.

Position Overview:

The Medical Illustrator collaborates with researchers, physicians, residents, therapists, etc to advance the quality and effectiveness of visual content for publications, presentations, grant applications, patient education, and internal communication, among other uses. This position is customizable - we want to work with your strengths to find where we can best put your talents to use.

1. Serves as an in-house resource on medical/scientific illustration, graphic design, and visual communication; Interprets medical/scientific information visually.
2. Applies the latest techniques and understanding of anatomy and relevant science to visually communicate to health professionals and patients.
3. Self-directed; works independently to see a project through start to finish.
4. Completes the research necessary to achieve accuracy in the visuals created.
5. Consult with physicians, researchers, editors, etc to plan, develop, revise, and implement illustrations and/or animations.
6. Work with printers, publishers, and/or web developers to ensure artwork is displayed as expected for intended end use.
7. Serves as photographer and edit photos as needed.
8. Serves as videographer and edit videos as needed.
9. Capabilities for patient- and healthcare professional-facing animations and technique videos.
10. Involvement in social media, website, and outreach.
11. Ensures that all assigned illustrations animations, and videos are produced on schedule, accurately and to established sizes, digital formats and quality standards.
12. Follows style guidelines to meet MU branding standards.
13. May collaborate with other departments throughout the MU system for their visual needs.
14. Proactively promote the above services as necessary by giving presentations, updating web presence, and/or creating promotional materials.
15. Advocates for technical and procedural innovation when appropriate.
16. Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree in Medical Illustration or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired is necessary.
Certification as a medical illustrator required.

Preferred Qualifications

Education: Master's degree in Medical Illustration or equivalent study and experience is preferred.
Credentials: Proficient in using Adobe CC applications including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premier Pro, and After Effects is preferred.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Hiring Range: $25.32-$39.99 hourly
Grade: PAT-008
University Title: CERTIFIED MEDICAL ILLUSTRATOR
