Position Description:

The Kern National Network is seeking a dynamic and experienced Communications Manager to be a high-level contributor and oversee the day-to-day operations of communication efforts. As the Communications Manager, you will be responsible for contributing to and executing communication strategies tailored to the needs of our department, while also ensuring awareness and alignment with the broader institutional messaging and goals. The Communications Manager will work closely with the Communications Director.

Responsibilities:

Communication Strategy Contribution:

    • Contribute to and implement communication plans specific to the department's objectives and initiatives.
    • Collaborate with the Communications Director and departmental leadership to identify key messages, target audiences, and communication channels.
    • Ensure consistency and alignment with the broader institutional communication strategy.
Internal and External Communication:
    • Facilitate internal communication within the department to foster collaboration, engagement, and alignment with organizational goals.
    • Develop and distribute internal templates, memos, and announcements to keep staff informed about departmental activities and updates.
    • Coordinate with central communications as needed to support external communication efforts.
    • Oversee the content and production of all external facing materials including press releases, media inquiries, presentations, signage and materials related to public events.
    • Maintain brand, style and tone consistency for all materials and communications for the department.
    • Support partners in maintaining brand standards.
    • Work with leadership to write remarks for departmental events and external engagements as needed.
Digital Media and Online Presence:
    • Manage the department's digital presence, including website content, social media platforms, and email newsletters.
    • Create and curate content to showcase departmental achievements, research, and initiatives.
    • Monitor and analyze digital metrics to track engagement and effectiveness of communication efforts.
Event Coordination and Promotion:
    • Coordinate communication efforts for departmental events, conferences, and workshops.
    • Develop promotional materials, event invitations, and presentations to attract attendees and enhance visibility.
Measurement and Reporting:
    • Track and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess the impact of communication strategies and tactics.
    • Prepare regular reports and presentations to communicate insights and progress to departmental leadership and external constituencies (especially project funders).
    • Use data-driven insights to optimize communication efforts and identify areas for improvement.
Supervision and Leadership:
    • Supervise and mentor departmental communications staff.

Knowledge - Skills - Abilities

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor messages for different audiences.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in digital communication tools and platforms, including website management, social media, and email marketing software.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and build relationships at all levels of the organization.
  • Knowledge of industry trends and best practices in communications and public relations.




Preferred Schedule:




M - F, 8am-5pm



Position Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:
Appropriate experience may be substituted for education on an equivalent basis.
Minimum education: Bachelor's Degree
Minimum experience: 8 years of integrated communication experience; five years of strategic communications planning and one to three years managing people.

Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred education: Master's degree

Preferred experience: 10 years years of integrated communication experience; six years of strategic communications planning and three plus years managing people.
