GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Patient Education Specialist promotes optimal patient education outcomes by implementing plans for new, revised, or existing educational offerings. These offerings are aimed at improving the quality and coordination of patient education. The specialist will also collect data for reporting and monitoring outcomes.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

People



  • Functions as an expert and consultant to staff on patient education practice.
  • Develops patient education materials and programs.
  • Works collaboratively and provides leadership to multidisciplinary teams to improve the effectiveness of patient education practice.
  • Functions as a patient advocate for education needs of patients.


Service



  • Anticipates and exceeds patients' and customers' expectations that meet all elements of the Henry Ford Experience.


Quality and Safety



  • Performs project management work of a complex nature to improve practice and quality of care. This may include developing and refining project objectives and work plan, guiding activities of project team, facilitating and/or leading meetings and teams, and coordinating/providing written and verbal presentations.
  • Develop new patient education or revise current patient education. Analyzes data for future comparisons and improvements.

  • Acts as a facilitator or coach, working with colleagues in other disciplines to promote positive change and the fulfillment of the HFHS mission.
  • Promotes professional development of self through formal and informal educational opportunities. Clearly demonstrates goal-directed, accountable behaviors regarding self.
  • Contributes to the development of the body of knowledge of the science of patient education.


Research and Education



  • Identifies patient education needs of HFHS using formal and informal assessment methods. Reports findings to manager.
  • Assists with the design of patient education structure, programs, courses, and tools that prepare and support staff to meet standards of care for HFHS.
  • Utilizes current research and evidence-based practice in the design and development and adapts/revises to address changes in health care and regulatory requirements.


Community

  • Represents department on committees and councils when necessary.

Finance


  • Aware of financial implications of patient education offerings such as the use or saving of time and personnel hours. Plans and implements patient education in a way that benefits both the learner and HFHS.
  • Throughout the designing and implementation of patient education, is aware of the financial implications of the patient education process.


EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:



  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Education, or other health care related field required.
  • Enrollment in a Master program preferred.
  • Must have at least one of the following:

    • At least 3 years of clinical experience;
    • At least 3 year of teaching experience;
    • Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES).


  • Demonstrates competence in development of quality education plans.
  • Demonstrates leadership, good communication skills, problem solving and organization skills, flexibility, self-directedness, and initiative required.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products.


CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:



  • If Bachelor's degree in Nursing, current Michigan RN licensure required.
  • Certification in area of specialty preferred.
  • Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES).
