The Animal Care Assistant (ACA) is responsible for the daily care of shelter animals, including cleaning kennels, feeding, and providing fresh water. The role also involves assisting with animal intake, supporting shelter operations, and providing enrichment activities. The ACA ensures animal care supplies are stocked, works with teams to follow protocols, and exercises good judgment in daily tasks. Additionally, the ACA may assist with special projects, such as inventory management or procedure development. 

The ideal candidate will possess many of the following: 

  • ·         Previous experience in animal care, including work in animal shelters, boarding facilities, or veterinary clinics
  • ·         Knowledge of common shelter diseases, with the ability to recognize symptoms and apply disease control practices
  • ·         Experience handling both large and small animals, with a focus on safety and care
  • ·         Understanding animal behavior and enrichment needs
  • ·         Strong work ethic with a passion for animal welfare and providing high-quality care
  • ·         Willingness to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple responsibilities
  • ·         Training or certification in animal welfare, animal care, or a related field is highly desirable

Please note: Animal Care Assistants work from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.. Uniforms and safety boots/shoes are required and provided. Animal Care Assistants will be required to work weekends and holidays, but not evenings, under normal circumstances. Much of the work takes place in an open-air kennel environment, which can be hot or cold depending on the time of year.
