As a Senior Utility Engineer, you will oversee the delivery and management of utility infrastructure improvement projects from concept to completion. This role offers the opportunity to shape infrastructure strategies, mentor future engineering leaders, and lead technically complex, high-impact projects for a wide variety of public and private clients.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead utility designs for various types of infrastructure improvement projects for a wide range of clients (e.g., utility companies, railroads, TxDOT, cities, counties, tollways, and transit agencies)
  • Oversee the development of plans, specifications, estimates, and schedules
  • Meet with clients and associated stakeholders; perform field site visits as needed
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to technical engineering staff at all levels
  • Conduct utility conflict analysis for proposed installations considering existing utilities and nearby infrastructure
  • Identify necessary utility relocations and protections; outline potential relocation sequencing
  • Maintain a working knowledge of policies, regulations, and engineering standards across utility types (water, sewer, gas, electric, telecommunications)
  • Coordinate with outside consultants on design tasks, technical progress, and QA/QC reviews
  • Understand Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) levels and apply them effectively during design
  • Use Computer Aided Design (CAD) software (e.g., AutoCAD, Microstation, GeoPak, OpenRoads) to review and approve designs, plans, details, exhibits, and alternatives
  • Read, interpret, and validate existing utility maps or as-builts using CAD or ArcGIS
  • Lead or assist in the development of utility guidelines, lessons learned, and supporting materials to improve team-wide production and quality
  • Assist in developing project scope, budget, schedule, and cost estimates for utility designs and third-party utility agreements
  • Coordinate simultaneous tasks and projects with strong organizational skills
  • Attend industry workshops, seminars, trainings, and conferences to stay current with best practices

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Civil, Construction, or Mechanical preferred)
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license is required at time of hire
  • 19+ years of experience in utility design, engineering, or coordination
  • TxDOT precertification in relevant categories is required or strongly preferred, including but not limited to:
    • 18.2.1 - Utility Engineering and Coordination
    • 18.3.1 - Utility Constructability Review
  • Experience with TxDOT utility coordination standards, permitting, and relocation processes is strongly preferred
  • Experience working for or coordinating with public agencies is a plus
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with CAD (AutoCAD, Microstation, GeoPak, OpenRoads) and GIS software (ArcGIS) is preferred
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Experience attending and contributing to utility coordination meetings with designers, utility companies, and reviewing agencies

Compensation Range:

$140,810.99 - $187,747.98
