Job Profile Summary
Reporting to the Laboratory Director is responsible for the direction of specimen flow including processing and testing of the specimens. The department supervisor will perform as a technologist, assist with maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment and perform quality control testing or designate. The department supervisor is the "go to" person for problem resolution and consultation to resolve technical problems. No supervision is required.

Major Responsibilities

1. Technical/ Administrative:
* Writes, reviews and revises policies and technical procedures.
* Ensures that all testing is accurate and meets the turnaround times established.
* Responsible for purchasing and maintaining appropriate inventory.
* Monitors the quality of work completed and evaluates adherence to technical standards.
* Maintains and troubleshoots all instruments.
* Trains new staff and assesses competency.
* Responds to requests for technical information.
* Participates in the development of short- and long-term goals for the department.

2. Communication:
* Communicates approved policies and procedures to staff and ensures compliance.
* Attends laboratory leadership meetings and staff meetings with the Director. Responds to laboratory related problems.
* Communicates problems to the Laboratory Supervisor.
* Assists in personnel functions, including hiring, orientation, staff development and disciplinary action.

3. QC/QI:
* Ensures ongoing compliance with requirements of all applicable regulatory agencies governing the department by monitoring established standards.
* Ensures continuous quality improvement through active management of the department quality assurance program.
* Monitors and reviews QC for trends, shifts and submits results for peer comparison.
* Prepares monthly QC reports for evaluation.
* Ensures data collection, monitoring, evaluation and corrective actions on improvement projects are documented within agreed upon time frames.
* Performs and/or ensures that CAP surveys are rotated among staff and results are submitted on time.
* Review of CAP surveys includes the use of the CAP Troubleshooting guide when necessary.
* Checks reports and resolves outstanding issues.
* Adheres to safety regulations.

4. Documentation:
* Completes staff competency assessments annually and participates in the CAP competency program.
* Completes performance improvement reports for the department.
* Records the investigation of errors, patient and physician complaints, employee issues and concerns, and patient risk incident reports.
* Oversees and responds to all deficiencies observed during inspections by the College of American Pathologists, Joint Commission, DPH or OSHA
* Completes appropriate QI forms recording errors, issues and concerns, patient or physician complaints and any other issues affecting patient care.

5. Special Assignments:
* Understands and works to improve the dynamics of customer support.
* Works with laboratory personnel, as necessary, to ensure departmental systems and operations are maintained to maximize customer service.
* Develops, initiates and monitors LEAN initiatives.
* Evaluations new instrumentation and new procedures.
* Microbiology Supervisor will be responsible for ensuring adequate staffing and completing evaluations of technical staff.

II. Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education:
Required:

1. Level of knowledge equivalent to that ordinarily acquired through a bachelor's degree. Registered MT (MLS) (ASCP) or equivalent or eligible.

Experience/Skills:
Required:
1.Three to five years of experience in a clinical laboratory.
