DIVISION: Solitude Mountain Operations

REPORTS TO: Bike Patrol Manager

LOCATION: Solitude Mountain Resort

CLASSIFICATION: Season to Season Flex/Hourly

POSITION: Bike Patrol Lead

As Bike Patroller at our mountain resort, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safety and enjoyment of guests and maintaining the integrity of our biking trails. You will patrol designated mountain areas on bicycle, assist riders, enforce safety regulations, and respond to emergencies as needed. This position requires a strong commitment to safety, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a dynamic outdoor environment. This position is 90%+ field work.

A Bike Patrol Lead is a supervisory role without disciplinary oversight, overseeing the bike patrol team day to day duties while ensuring safety, security, and efficient response in areas where traditional vehicles may be less effective. The position combines leadership with hands-on duties, requiring both management skills and physical endurance.

Key Responsibilities - Lead Bike Patrol
  • Team Supervision: Lead and manage the day to day duties of the Solitude bike patrol team, ensuring adherence to protocols and efficient coverage of assigned areas.
  • Training and Development: Conduct training sessions for new recruits, focusing on safety procedures, emergency response and its equipment, and effective communication.
  • Patrol Operations: Oversee and participate in regular bike patrol operations, ensuring thorough coverage and prompt response to incidents.
  • Incident Management: Act as the primary point of contact during emergencies, coordinating responses and ensuring proper documentation.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Ensure all patrol equipment, including bicycles, UTV's and safety gear, are well-maintained and ready for use.
  • Reporting and Documentation: Maintain accurate records of patrol activities, incidents, and team performance for review and analysis. Fill out AM and PM daily logs, ensure the dispatch phone gets transferred each morning and evening.


Required Qualifications
  • Experience: Proven experience in security or emergency services, with a strong background in bike patrol operations.
  • Leadership Skills: Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a team, handle conflict, and make decisions under pressure.
  • Physical Fitness: Good physical condition to handle the demands of bike patrols in various terrains and weather conditions.
  • Certifications: Relevant certifications and an EMT or OEC, CPR, and black diamond riding skills preferred.
  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills for reporting and interacting with the public and other agencies.


JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Bike Patrol
  • Trail Patrol: Patrol assigned biking trails and designated areas of the mountain on bicycle, monitoring for hazards, obstructions, and unsafe behavior. Provide guidance and assistance to riders, including directions, trail recommendations, and equipment checks.
  • Safety Enforcement: Enforce resort policies and safety regulations on biking trails, including speed limits, trail closures, and helmet requirements. Educate guests on safe biking practices and proper trail etiquette. Proficient in documenting injuries in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Emergency Response: Respond promptly to accidents, injuries, or other emergencies on the mountain. Administer first aid as needed, assess the situation, and coordinate with emergency services for additional assistance if required. Proficient in search and rescue in the backcountry.
  • Trail Maintenance: Conduct routine inspections of biking trails to identify and address maintenance needs, such as trail erosion, signage damage, or fallen debris. Report any maintenance issues to the appropriate department for resolution. Set up and maintain mountain signs and markings by following the current NSAA guidelines and recommendations of insurance carrier. Ability to use a variety of tools and equipment in a mountain environment.
  • Guest Assistance: Provide exceptional customer service to guests, answering questions, providing information, and addressing concerns or complaints in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Lift Operations: Basic understanding of lift operations and the ability to operate a chair and bike hauler. Proficient in lift evacuations using specialized equipment. Provide breaks for lift operations as needed.
  • Communication: Maintain regular communication with resort staff, including ski patrol, lift operators, and guest services, to coordinate efforts and share important information regarding trail conditions, incidents, and guest feedback. Assist other departments as needed and or directed.
  • Environmental Stewardship: Promote environmental stewardship and Leave No Trace principles among guests and staff. Encourage responsible trail use and proper waste disposal practices to minimize the resort's ecological impact.
  • Operation of Machinery: Conduct routine inspections of UTV's or other off-road vehicles approved for bike patrol operations. Proficient in operating the machines on designated routes pre-determined by rescue plan. Proficient in chainsaw and brusher operation and basic maintenance.


JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • Previous experience in outdoor recreation, biking, or related field preferred.
  • Strong biking skills and knowledge of mountain biking techniques and equipment.
  • Current EMT level certification, CPR.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with guests and colleagues.
  • Ability to hike, bike, and work in a mountain environment while carrying heavy equipment.
  • Current Driver's License and the ability to pass a background check to drive resort maintenance and rescue vehicles.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and terrain, including steep, rugged terrain and high altitudes.
  • Physical fitness and stamina to perform bike patrols and respond to emergencies as needed.
  • Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and evenings as required by resort operations.
