Job Summary

#CA-DS

Working under the direction of the Pharmacy Manager over Automation, Informatics, Analytics & Diversion Detection, the Clinical Informatics & Analytics Pharmacist Specialist (IS) will function as a clinical informatics subject matter expert to implement and maintain pharmacy applications, automation, and supporting analytics. The IS applies advanced informatics concepts and extensive knowledge of medication-use systems and technology to projects of all levels of scope and complexity. This position leads and supports pharmacy initiatives as a pharmacy informatics subject matter expert. The IS responds to analytics requests and data visualization for all medication-use systems for enterprise use. The IS helps with design of necessary reports and data files to support the pharmacy department and to support the integration of pharmacy systems with internal and/or external applications and systems. They function as the primary contact to troubleshoot problems and questions from end-users during training, go-live and stabilization periods. The Informatics Specialist is one of the primary liaisons between the Pharmacy Department and Innovation Technology Services (ITS).

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position.

  • California Board of Pharmacy License by start date.
  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree (Pharm D) from an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education certified school of pharmacy, or equivalent training.
  • Completion of a Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) residency program, or 3 years of work experience in pharmacy informatics or health system pharmacy.
  • Completion of a Postgraduate Year Two (PGY2) residency in informatics, or 3 years of work experience in inpatient pharmacy operations.
  • In-depth knowledge of all relevant clinical informatics software, pharmacy inventory management systems and pharmacy automation systems, and of the highly complex concepts, principles, policies, methodologies, techniques, best practices, regulations, and standards practices involved with patient care and electronic medical data management throughout the medication use process.
  • Advanced analytical skills and expertise in documentation and reporting, with the ability to apply metrics, design and run queries, collect and analyze performance data, and produce sophisticated reports and analyses for management use.
  • Ability to design reports and identify data files to support the pharmacy department and to support the integration of pharmacy systems with internal and/or external applications and systems.
  • Advanced ability to serve as a technical leader and information resource, and to work collaboratively with senior staff and management across departments, providing advice, counsel, and analysis on issues of policy, functionality, system efficiency, upgrades, business analytics, and industry advances and trends.
  • Advance understanding of data systems to develop reports and data files to support drug use management activities, value improvement projects, business, financial services and operational improve opportunities
  • Ability to apply advanced problem-resolution skills to highly complex issues, quickly diagnose problems, and develop, test, and implement appropriate and effective solutions in a timely manner.
  • Broadly encompassing or highly in-depth knowledge of pharmacy practice. Knowledge of controlled terminology, clinical workflows, user interface optimization, clinical decision support, rules development, data integration and mining, clinical ontologies and adoption of technology
  • Advanced organizational and project management skills, with the ability to lead a team, prioritize tasks, and see projects through from inception to completion on schedule.
  • Ability to develop process maps and workflows to document design requirements for applications, to identify system inefficiencies and/or to identify opportunities for improve to efficiencies, productivity and/or reduce cost.
  • Advanced interpersonal communications skills, to convey highly technical information and instructions to all levels of clinical users in a clear and concise manner, to provide technical support, and to develop and deliver training materials as needed.
  • Working knowledge of federal and state/local regulations around medication handling requirements and controlled substance accountability
  • Ability to maintain composure, efficiency and a positive, customer-service oriented manner during periods of peak workload, with frequent interruptions, under tight deadlines, and when interacting with challenging customers who may be ill, angry, or emotionally distressed.
  • Problem-solving skills to independently recognize and define a problem; identify the resources available to help solve the problem; create and implement viable solutions; and follow through to ensure the problem is resolved to the satisfaction of all parties.
  • Decision-making skills to independently exercise delegated authority to take action, and to recognize when it is appropriate to seek assistance from others when limits of delegated authority have been reached.
  • Ability to work with, direct, and evaluate pharmacy residents and students.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Epic Systems Certification in one or more analytical or reporting modules (e.g., Clarity).
  • Epic Systems Certification in one or more medication-use modules (e.g., Willow Inpatient, Willow Ambulatory, Willow Inventory, Beacon).
  • Board Certification, or additional certification in specialty practice area (e.g., Med Safety, Clinical Informatics, Automation & Technology, Health Informatics, etc.)
  • Lean Six Sigma Certification (i.e., yellow belt, green belt, or black belt).
  • Advanced 340B Operations Certificate
  • Master's Degree in a related practice area (e.g., MBA or MS)
  • 5 years of pharmacy informatics practice experience.
  • Experience working in an academic medical center setting.
  • Experience with data visualization using Power BI and/or Tableau.
  • Experience with Epic reporting & analytics tools (SlicerDicer, Reporting Workbench, Cogito Dashboards).
  • Experience with Epic, Pyxis ES, and/or BD Pyxis Logistics as a front-end operational user, or as a system administrator.

The Department of Pharmacy is a dynamic, integral, and critical part of patient care provided by UC Davis Health. As a department of greater than 600 professional, technical, and administrative support personnel, we focus on providing patient-centered medication management that optimizes outcomes through practice, education, research, and leadership through the continuum of care. We also have the largest pharmacy residency program in the country with 46 total residents in 13 different programs.

The Department of Pharmacy offers comprehensive pharmaceutical services (unit dose, IV admixtures, clinical services, infusion pumps, and teaching) throughout the health system complex 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The pharmacy services encompass inpatient pharmacy services as well as an expansive footprint in the ambulatory care space where we have clinical pharmacists embedded within our clinics and specialty care locations. Our operational teams support the health system enterprise with three inpatient pharmacies, five outpatient pharmacies, two infusion pharmacies, a home infusion service line, and the full complement of pharmacy purchasing, stores, and distribution.
