MISSION STATEMENT:

SCOPE OF POSITION:
Under the supervision of the Camp Operations Manager, the Camp Assistant is responsible for the care and maintenance of camp facilities. This position will work collaboratively with other camp staff members to ensure the smooth operation of the camp.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:
* High school diploma or equivalent required
* One to three years' experience in a camp leadership role preferred
* Experience working with children required
* Commercial kitchen experience preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
* Knowledge of Salvation Army practices and organization
* Ability to pass a criminal background check
* Maintain valid Washington State Driver's License and pass a driver safety training annually
* Must possess and demonstrate an ability to work with people from all populations, including community groups, participants, campers, and staff in an affable, concerned and caring manner
* Must be knowledgeable in the areas of child/personnel safety assessment, planning, problem solving, and crisis intervention
* Able to maintain cleanliness & safety standards for kitchen and food services
* Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and integrity
* Strong communication skills, including written and verbal
* Self-motivated with the ability to motivate others
* Able to meet deadlines and work under pressure
* Detail oriented
* Capable of multi-tasking
* Energetic, personable, and dependable.
* Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards relating to assigned vehicles
* Must be proficient in Microsoft Suite

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Administration
* Follow Salvation Army guidelines regarding standards for program, safety, and health concerns
* Attend and participate in all staff meetings
* Maintain USDA compliance. Be present on the day of the USDA review, which happens every three years or as needed.
* Participate in all camp programs as required
* Assist Camp Operations Manager with facilitation of retreats, as necessary
* Assist with transportation needs between Camp Gifford and Spokane campus, including
transportation of campers and their belongings, supply/donation pickups, seasonal kettles, etc.
* Assist in any other duties as requested to maintain a consistently high level of efficiency in the
operation of the camp.
Maintenance
* Clean, perform inspections, and ensure proper storage of Camp Gifford equipment and tools
* Routine maintenance of camp facilities with the oversight of the Camp Operations Manager, to include winterizing and getting camp ready for the summer camp season.
* Responsible for maintaining outdoor spaces, including mowing lawns and ensuring the grounds are clean and well-maintained.
* Regular maintenance and daily cleaning of chapel including, straightening chairs, sweeping, garbage, etc.
* Regular maintenance and cleaning of dining hall.
* Ensure daily garbage removal to include trips to the dump, as needed.
* Help keep the garbage area clean and orderly.
* Periodically check bathrooms to ensure they are kept in proper order and stocked.
* Sweep, mop, disinfect and deodorize Goebel, Cedar Circle and Peaceful Pines bathrooms.
* Sweep cement surfaces.
* Assist with cleanup of the total camp at the end of the teaching sessions and at the conclusion of the summer.
* Consult with Camp Operations Manager concerning recommendations for building and ground repair
* Ensure adequate supply of campfire wood. As allowable, start and extinguish campfires during nights when campfire is needed.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
* Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or sometimes
continuous basis.
* Ability to grasp, push, pull objects as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead
* Ability to operate a telephone
* Ability to operate a desktop or laptop computer
* Ability to lift to 50 lbs.
* Ability to access and produce information from computers
* Ability to understand written information
