POSITION SPECIFICS

The Laboratory of Dr. Vishal Singh in the College of Health and Human Development, Department of Nutritional Sciences at Penn State, is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher with interest in diet-gut microbiota interactions and its implication(s) on gastrointestinal, metabolic and liver health. The Singh lab aims to develop microbiome-informed dietary interventions to improve gastrointestinal and metabolic and liver health, and, additionally, identify the molecular link by which microbial fermentation-derived metabolites aggravate or alleviate chronic inflammatory disorders, including inflammatory bowel disease. See our two recent publications: 1- Gut Microbes. 2024 Jan-Dec;16(1):2341457. doi: 10.1080/19490976.2024.2341457, 2- Cancer Reports. 2023 Nov;6(11):e1863. doi: 10.1002/cnr2.1863, 3-Gut. 2019 Oct;68(10):1801-1812. doi: 10.1136/gutjnl-2018-316250, and 4-Cell. 2018 Oct 18;175(3):679-694.e22. doi: 10.1016/j.cell.2018.09.004 for more details.

Job Responsibilities:

The postdoctoral fellow will be in charge of the analysis of multi-omics data derived from preclinical studies and the human microbiome (including metabarcoding, metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, and transcriptomics) in collaboration with lab members and our collaborators. Knowledge of integrating microbiome and metabolome data is an advantage but is not required. Similarly, experience in clinical data mining/machine learning and biomarker detection is a plus. The successful candidate will perform experiments and data analysis, assist with regulatory compliance, write follow-up grants, and disseminate findings through publications and presentations.

Qualifications:

The Postdoctoral Researcher must be able to work independently and as an interdisciplinary team member where they will have the opportunity to interact with faculty, staff, graduate students, and undergraduate students. Additional qualifications include strong oral and written communication skills, excellent organizational and problem-solving skills, and a detail-oriented work style. Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate in an appropriate field (Gut Microbiome, Immunology, Microbiology, Nutrition, Quantitative and Computational sciences or related fields). The successful candidate must have a background in bioinformatics for omics data analysis (e.g., (meta)genomics, (meta)transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics data). Additional experience and training in basic microbiology techniques and preclinical mouse models, including gnotobiotic mice, are desirable but not required. Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as a proven publication record is desired.

Applications:

Please include a cover letter (highlighting research experience and future research plans), a copy of your most recent CV (including education, work experiences, publications, and a description of previous research), and the contact information for three references. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
