About the Position

As a Planning Intern, you will provide research assistance for the Planning Program and receive a host of experience-related benefits. In this capacity, you will perform deep and thorough research into other jurisdictions' practices on certain zoning ordinance topics. You will produce research in a defined format. You will also have the opportunity to shadow staff at public hearings, shadow selected staff on processing and reviewing cases, and gain experience producing staff reports. As part of our ongoing Zoning Ordinance review, you will support an initial project to propose and prepare graphics wherever possible in the ordinance and suggest the use of tables/charts that can eventually replace paragraphs of text. You will research and propose revisions and innovations in this area. Finally, as part of our ongoing Comprehensive Plan update, you may take on additional related research projects in areas such as use planning and other development subjects.

We Require

This position is open to students who are currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program in planning, geography, or a related field of study.

Job Contributions

  • Provide research on planning and zoning-related subjects
  • Produce reports that include analysis of research and preparation of charts and matrices
  • Prepare graphics and charts that illustrate requirements from the zoning ordinance
  • Support customer service initiatives at the front counter by providing answers to general questions about planning and zoning
  • Manage cases related to administrative planning and zoning applications

Working Conditions

  • Work is typically performed in an office or administrative setting and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions
  • This position may require exerting up to 20 lbs. occasionally, up to 10 lbs. frequently, or negligible amounts constantly
  • This position may require walking or standing to a significant degree
