ABOUT THE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT OF JEFFERSON COUNTY
Jefferson County's Highway Department works diligently to keep our roads safe by upgrading, repairing, and maintaining 390 lane-miles of State Highways (100 lane-miles are located on Interstate Highway 94), 521 lane-miles of County Trunk Highways, and various Town Highways as requested. These responsibilities include reconstructing and resurfacing county and town highways, removing snow and preventing ice accumulation, installing signs, maintaining, and repairing department equipment, performing welding tasks for equipment, issuing permits to install driveways on County Trunk Highways, providing emergency assistance, and supporting other county departments in completion of special projects. ABOUT THE HIGHWAY COMISSIONER POSITION
The Highway Commissioner directs the planning, construction, maintenance, and operations of the County's highway infrastructure. This role ensures compliance with state and federal transportation laws, develops and oversees departmental budgets, manages departmental personnel and safety initiatives, and coordinates with state, municipal, and federal agencies regarding highway projects and funding. WHAT YOU WILL DO AS THE HIGHWAY COMISSIONER
With the necessary knowledge and experience, you will be successful in this role by completing the below key tasks and responsibilities:
- Supervises Highway Department staff, including hiring, coaching, evaluating, and discipline.
- Develops, implements, and oversees highway construction, maintenance, and operations programs.
- Presents and manages operational and capital budgets. Advises Highway Committee and County Administrator on infrastructure needs and operations.
- Develops short- and long-range infrastructure plans. Directs the development, implementation and maintenance of comprehensive policies and procedures regarding departmental services and programs.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, Construction Management, Business Administration, or closely related field.
- Seven years of experience in highway engineering, maintenance, or construction, with at least three years in management.
- A valid Wisconsin motor vehicle operator's license.
Preferred Requirements
- Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in Wisconsin preferred.
- Ten or more years of progressive highway or public works management experience.
- Federal Highway Administration certification in bridge inspections preferred.
- Familiarity with local government operations and public sector budgeting.
Wage
Salary: $118,081 - $124,820/ year based on experience and qualification.
Potential to earn up to $158,932/ year.
