Sr. Outreach Coordinator, PAN Study

The Department of Neurology is seeking a Sr. Outreach Coordinator who will oversee the community outreach, participant recruitment, and participant retention efforts for the Johns Hopkins site of the Precision Aging Network (PAN) Study, a large multi-center research study. The overarching goal is to create profiles of risk for cognitive decline in a large, diverse cohort of approximately 400 middle-aged and older adults (50-79 yrs.) without dementia. Measures being examined include cognitive testing, blood, blood vessel health using ultrasound, frailty and biometric assessments, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. This position involves a wide range of activities that are instrumental in supporting the recruitment and retention of diverse participants. The Sr. Outreach Coordinator will work with a team of researchers coordinated by Drs. Anja Soldan and Corinne Pettigrew in the division of Cognitive Neuroscience in the Department of Neurology, and in close collaboration with the PAN Study's Coordinating Center and Outreach Coordinators at the other PAN Study sites.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the study's community outreach and recruitment efforts in the Greater Baltimore area.
  • Plan, conduct and track community outreach, and schedule educational programs to promote participant recruitment and provide general visibility.
  • Plan and participate in community events, give talks in the community, participate in health fairs, prepare materials for social media and direct outreach, and engage with community partners, particularly underserved members of the community.
  • Work with MindCrowd, the online participant registry that supports enrollment into the PAN study to facilitate the enrollment of selected participants.
  • Oversee screening and follow-up of potential research participants: complete eligibility screenings with potential participants, determine if they meet enrollment eligibility criteria, schedule eligible participants for in-person visits and arrange transportation as needed.
  • Track and report recruitment and enrollment progress.
  • Organize activities that are important for participant retention, including preparation of thank you cards and holiday mailings.
  • Assist with the in-person study visits on an as-needed basis, which may include: (1) obtaining informed consent and conducting and scoring in-person assessments (e.g., cognitive testing, frailty tasks, and biometric assessments); (2) accompanying participants to study procedures, including MRI scans or blood draws; (3) processing, labeling, and storing biospecimens; (4) completing study forms and entering data from study visits into an electronic database; and (5) miscellaneous related duties as assigned.
  • Attend regular study team meetings at Johns Hopkins and virtual meetings pertaining to recruitment and retention organized by the PAN Coordinating Center.
  • Oversee budgetary expenditures related to recruitment and retention activities and prepare regular reports of the outcomes of recruitment efforts and the status of recruitment.
  • Travel in the Greater Baltimore area, as well as between several Johns Hopkins medical campuses including the main East Baltimore medical center and the Bayview Medical Center.
  • A flexible daily time schedule will sometimes be necessary, based on the time and location of community outreach/education events, study participant visit needs, and the available staffing.

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with basic medical terminology
  • Good computer skills and the ability to handle detailed quantitative information.
  • Ability to connect with others and interact respectfully and in a culturally competent way with individuals across a range of ages and cognitive function.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.
  • Three years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • At least one year of previous experience with recruitment and community outreach in a health-related field.
  • Familiarity with REDCap.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University's salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
