Primary Duties

1. Assumes a leading role in the preparation of corporate accounting journal entries, reconciliations, reports, and other information as needed by obtaining, developing, and analyzing appropriate financial close information. Serves as a subject matter expert for items relating to Corporate Accounting close, specifically mass allocations run across the organization, and as a mentor for Corporate Accounting teammates.

2. Interacts with upper management (including Directors and the VP and Controller) and other departments (i.e. Rates, Legal) as a strategic resource to determine appropriate accounting treatment for unique specific transactions during monthly and quarterly close.

3. Reviews financial data collected from multiple departments (i.e. Rates, Legal, AP) for accuracy and appropriateness and uses data to prepare and/or correct journal entries, reconciliations and reports, including various results submitted to Senior Management for review (i.e. Legal Accrual Analysis and Rate Case Support).

4. Initiates or supports technical accounting research as needed for items related to Corporate Accounting topics and drafts initial analyses/proposal of journal entries to address these issues. Addresses accounting issues as they arise and reviews emerging technical accounting literature for applicability in accordance with US GAAP and FERC Uniform System of Accounts. Assists with the implementation of new accounting pronouncements as needed.

5. Assists with matters related to Variable Interest Entity (VIE) and consolidation accounting are reflected correctly within the general ledger. Performs special projects such as accounting for acquisitions and/or disposals within the general ledger system. Assists with business processes impacted by such changes to increase accounting efficiency and effectiveness.

6. Serves as a key contact for the preparation of the Cost Allocation Manual, which is updated annually to capture internal allocation of costs and provided to all regulators as requested.

7. Serves as a key contact for the maintaining and updating the Atmos Accounting Chart of Accounts (COA), which must be updated for such items as cost center, mass allocation, inactive/active service areas, etc. based on business needs and changes and integrated into all applicable IT systems.

8. Interacts with external parties including auditors, state regulatory commission staff and others as needed. This includes management of requests and follow-ups as needed.

9. Provides General Ledger data to other departments and parties as required.

10. Serves as the key contact for the accounting close cloud software tool which tracks reconciliations and close tasks. Interacts with other departments for updates to tasks, tracking reconciliations and making the system most efficient when interacting with Oracle (i.e. works with external party consultants and Atmos IT related to items such as making certain reconciliations automated where applicable).

11. Assists with training and cross training employees within the Corporate Accounting Department.

12. Oversees Corporate Accounting close tasks, validating close is completed timely and accurately. Validates all system allocations are properly run and posted to the General Ledger System.

13. Serves as a subject matter expect for Oracle and works with Atmos IT for system changes/implementations.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Educational/Experience Level:

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a related field and 5 years of related experience in Accounting, or equivalent.

CPA preferred.

Communication Skills:
Requires the ability to communicate with internal and/or external customers in order to obtain and/or provide explanations and/or modifications on technical or other complex concepts to individuals with little or no background in the area under discussion, verbally and in writing.

Numeric Skills:

Requires the ability to perform analyses involving ratios, percentages and simple statistical methods.

Computer Skills:

Requires knowledge of various software applications to create documents, reports and/or graphics.

Work Conditions:

Works in an office environment. Requires occasionally performing activities including, but not limited to, bending, stooping, grasping, reaching, twisting, turning and/or lifting.
