EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION Required
- Education
- `Bachelor's Degree in science, education, or related field
- Experience
- 5 years of experience in development and use of training methods, techniques, and materials.
- 5 years of experience working with rodent procedures, including
- 2 years of hands-on experience in aseptic survival surgery techniques and procedures.
- May consider additional years of related experience in lieu of degree.
- Licenses and Certifications
- Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) or license veterinary technician, Certification by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Upon Hire
JOB DUTIES
- Provides hands-on instruction in aseptic technique, anesthesia and analgesia administration, surgical procedures, tissue handling, stereotaxic surgery procedures, wound closure, and perioperative care.
- Evaluates surgical competency of research staff while providing constructive feedback for improvement.
- Partners with the Assistant Director of Training and Technical Services and ARC veterinary staff to refine and evolve the surgery training program and ensure the training program aligns with current IACUC policies and training assessment needs.
- Leads training with research staff (group and one-on-one training), including animal handling, animal husbandry, animal health, technical procedures, IACUC policies, and department standard operating procedures.
- Identifies and assesses basic training needs and conducts remedial training with ARC and research staff, including non-compliant research staff.
- Develops and designs curriculum and a variety of training materials, videos, online modules, handouts, and other training tools.
- Organizes lectures and training appointments, prepares training manuals and materials, visual aids such as slides, and other training.
- Completes, organizes, and inputs training records and acknowledgements.
- Assists or leads in training ARC staff.
- Ensures all training, guidance, and curriculum is in compliance with ARC Standard Operational Procedures, IACUC Policies, the Guide, AWA, NIH Guidelines, USDA, CDC, and PHS Policy.
- Stays knowledgeable with regulatory laws and guidelines in the laboratory animal field.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
