JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Penn State is searching for a full time Emergency Medical Technician - Grade 6 to join the team. Duties include:
  • Respond to medical emergencies based on dispatch information

  • Assess patients; determine extent of illness or injury

  • Perform emergency medical aid on the scene and during transport within the limits of current Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) standard practices, including application of bandages and/or splints, administration of oxygen, artificial resuscitation, medication, and automated external defibrillator (AED)

  • Prepare patient for transport according to established protocols and monitor patient's condition

  • Assist patients into and out of ambulance

  • Assist Advanced Life Support providers with patient care management, as required

  • Maintain radio contact and regular communication with dispatcher, medical facility, police/fire department, and other responding units

  • Obtain instructions regarding treatment, arrange for medical facility reception, and provide hospital and health center personnel with information related to patient's vital signs, circumstances of emergency, and care administered

  • Complete Pennsylvania state-required Emergency Medical Services (EMS) charts within 24 hours of a service call concerning patient information, care given, number and type of call, etc.

  • Complete appropriate patient care, billing, vehicle checklists, and other documentation

  • Utilize various equipment and emergency medical apparatus in performing emergency medical services to include two-way radio, oxygen tank/mask, stretcher, backboard, AED, etc.

  • Operate University vehicles to transport patients in accordance with Pennsylvania state protocols and guidelines; deliver supplies and materials to campus locations as needed

  • Maintain ambulance and emergency care related equipment and supplies in a state of readiness as defined by a standardized list

  • Conduct regular inventory of supplies

  • Maintain EMS facilities and vehicles in a clean and orderly condition

  • Perform checks of vehicle operation each shift

  • Checks will include a required list of equipment and supplies, fuel level, tire pressure, headlight and turn signals, emergency and stop flashing lights, doors, windshield wipers, horn and siren, etc.; clean and wash vehicles as needed

  • Take ambulance to Service Garage according to preventive maintenance schedule

  • Report on the need for repairs to ambulances and equipment to supervisor

  • Participate in continuing education training and quality improvement activities as it relates to emergency medical services

  • Complete recertification programs and testing as required

  • Occasionally provide guidance, training, and direction to part-time employees, students, and trainees; report any issues to supervisor

  • Move, assemble, and disassemble furniture and equipment

  • Setup and clean-up chairs, tables, etc. for meetings and other scheduled events

  • Perform the duties of the Health Center Utility Worker as required

Job Requirements: Requires the use of commercial English, grammar and arithmetic such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, including decimals and fractions; simple use of formulas, charts, tables, drawings, specifications, schedules, wiring diagrams, together with the use of adjustable measuring instruments, graduates and the like requiring interpretation in their various applications; or the posting, preparation, interpretation, use and checking of reports, forms, records and comparable data. Requires current Pennsylvania Emergency Medical Technician Certification, current CPR certification, current EMS Vehicle Operator (EMSVO), a valid Driver's License, and respiratory mask fit testing. Must complete Incident Command System (ICS) 100, 200, and 700 courses, as well as HAZMAT Awareness Training within 30 days of hire. Over 6 months up to and including 12 months of effective experience; must have 1,040 hours of prior 911 experience.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification - American Red Cross, American Heart Association or other accredited organization, Driver's License - Applicable U.S. State Department of Transportation, Emergency Medical Services Vehicle Operator (EMSVO) Certification - Pennsylvania Department of Health and Safety, Pennsylvania Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification - Pennsylvania Department of Health

BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES

This position requires the following clearances in addition to applicable background checks: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks. Employee must be able to wear a respirator and will be subject to medical clearance. Penn State does not sponsor or take over sponsorship of a staff employment Visa. Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S.
