DETENTION AIDE

Department of Police

Number of Positions: 15 (Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval)

Starting Salary: $48,588

This position is open to the public and all current City employees covered under the City's collective bargaining agreement with the Public Safety Employees BARGAINING UNIT 2 - S.E.I.U. Local 73. Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

Under general supervision, responsible for the custody, care, and processing of prisoners in the central detention and district lockups of the Chicago Police Department until processing is completed and ensures that the detention facility and equipment are properly maintained, and performs related duties as required

ESSENTIAL DUTIES



  • Assumes the responsibility for custody, care, and processing of prisoners
  • Ensures the legal rights of all people in custody are preserved
  • Obtain central booking numbers and checks for previous arrest records and outstanding warrants
  • Photographs prisoners detained at Police facilities using an electronic photograph system
  • Fingerprints prisoners by making impressions using the manual ink method and/or the electronic live scan/biometric fingerprint scanners
  • Searches prisoners using proper pat-down procedures and operate a handheld scanner during searches to ensure only permitted items are brought into the detention facility
  • Asks screening questions and observes prisoners to ensure they are physically fit before admission to the detention facility
  • Escorts prisoners to detainment cells and locks and unlocks cells
  • Performs security checks by inspecting detention cells at frequent intervals to ensure order, discipline and the safety of prisoners
  • Maintains control of uncooperative and unruly detainees
  • Makes appropriate notifications when prisoners are injured or need medical attention
  • Makes immediate notification to supervisory personnel any matter which may require investigation or action, or are inconsistent with Department goals as they relate to processing of persons in custody
  • Use department computer to update and maintain prisoner information in the Citizen Law Enforcement Analysis and Reporting (CLEAR) system
  • Inventories personal property of prisoners and prepares receipts for items inventoried
  • Updates and maintains records to document distribution of meals, visitations, and other activities in detention facilities
  • Prepares prisoners for transportation to other detention areas or courts by compiling a file of all relevant prisoner information
  • Operates a meat slicing machine and follows standard food sanitary procedures in preparing and dispensing sandwiches to prisoners at designated mealtimes
  • Ensures the detention facility is kept clean and orderly and equipment is properly maintained
  • Maintains control logs and prepares statistical reports documenting operational activities within the detention
  • Becomes familiar with an adherence to all department rules, regulations, directives, and established procedures
  • Complete any required additional training to maintain standards and skills as directed
  • Performs additional duties as deemed necessary for the proper operation of the lock-up


Additional duties may be required for this position

Location: Various Police Districts throughout the City

Days: Rotating Days Off (There is a high probability that you will have to work weekends and holidays)

Hours: Various (10:00 PM - 6:00 AM, 6:00 AM - 2PM, or 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM)

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School graduation or General Education Development test certificate (GED).

Willingness and ability to perform the duties of the job.

Persons who are offered employment must successfully pass a job training program.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS



  • Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of application
  • Successful candidates must pass a drug screen, background investigation and required
