Position Purpose

The EMS Adjunct Instructor plays a vital role in delivering high-quality education and training in alignment with the National EMS Education Standards and the Ohio Department of Public Safety (ODPS) curriculum. Under the guidance of the EMS Program Coordinator, this position is responsible for planning, instructing, and assessing both classroom and laboratory components of the EMS program, including College Credit Plus courses.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver engaging didactic and hands-on laboratory instruction that aligns with ODPS and national standards.
  • Supervise and support students in the classroom, lab, and during clinical/in-field experiences.
  • Collaborate with the EMS Program Coordinator and EMS Clinical Coordinator to provide effective clinical and field direction and academic advising to students.
  • Ensure proper use and maintenance of EMS instructional equipment and supplies.
  • Participate in ongoing review and enhancement of EMS program content to reflect current industry practices and diverse career pathways.



Essential Functions

  • Demonstrate a comprehensive and accurate understanding of the Ohio Department of Public Safety (ODPS) certification level appropriate to the instructor's credential.

  • Instruct, supervise, and evaluate students enrolled in EMS courses, which may include Paramedic, Advanced EMT (AEMT), EMT, First Responder, and refresher training.

  • Prepare and submit required reports to the Department Chair and EMS Program Coordinator in a timely and accurate manner.

  • Incorporate instructional technology and digital tools to enhance student learning when appropriate.

  • Apply effective teaching and learning strategies that align with ODPS curriculum objectives and engage a diverse student population.

  • Prepare thoroughly for each class session, including reviewing course materials and aligning lesson plans with curriculum standards.

  • Collaborate with college staff and faculty to support departmental goals and student success.

  • Serve as a positive ambassador for the EMS program, associate degree offerings, and continuing education opportunities.

  • Facilitate hands-on instruction during laboratory and practical skills sessions.

  • Evaluate student performance objectively and consistently using established assessment criteria.

  • Demonstrate empathy and responsiveness to student needs and individual circumstances.

  • Collect and review student feedback through instructor evaluations to improve teaching practices.

  • Maintain accurate and confidential student records, including attendance, progress, and performance documentation.

  • Report student progress regularly to the EMS Program Coordinator and Department Chair.

  • Participate in the ongoing review, revision, and enhancement of program policies and procedures in coordination with program leadership.

  • Maintain current EMS certifications and comply with all ODPS and Stark State College policies, procedures, and professional standards.

  • Supervise laboratory sessions and assist with practical skill instruction and evaluations as needed.

  • Fulfill faculty responsibilities as outlined by Stark State College.

  • Assist with maintaining program accreditations and ODPS Charter compliance in collaboration with the Department Chair and EMS Program Coordinator.

  • Support departmental initiatives and perform additional duties as assigned by the Department Chair or EMS Program Coordinator.




Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ohio Department of Public Safety EMT Certification
  • Current Ohio Department of Public Safety EMS Instructor Certification (assistant instructor does not meet this requirement)
  • Must maintain currency of required certifications
  • Associate's degree in a related field from a nationally recognized accrediting institution.
  • Current valid Ohio driver's license
