The primary responsibilities of this position are to design, develop, support, and maintain backend software systems powering our Member Experience data products. Other responsibilities include collaborating with product, design, and technical leadership to translate ambiguous requirements into scalable architectures and executing the full lifecycle of modern data-intensive software systems.

Duties & Responsibilities

Designs Software Applications:

  • Gathers product and system requirements, defines data modeling strategies, and researches applicable backend technologies.

  • Works with Product Managers, Technical Program Managers, and other senior engineers to architect scalable data services and pipelines.

  • Designs supporting database schemas (PostgreSQL), backend microservices, and APIs that drive core Member Experience data products.

  • Performs systems analysis and architectural design for new services and core platform components.

  • Ensures codebase and systems comply with engineering best practices and participates in process improvement initiatives.

  • Defines and maintains test plans across unit, integration, and system levels.

Develops and Implements Software Applications:

  • Implements backend services and APIs in Python, Elixir, or Golang, following design specifications and internal development standards.

  • Produces high-quality supporting documentation and design artifacts.

  • Develops and refactors code for performance, clarity, and testability.

  • Collaborates with peers and provides technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced engineers.

  • Prepares features and infrastructure changes for production release, including deployment plans and rollback strategies.

  • Conducts and participates in peer code reviews, contributing to team-wide engineering excellence.

Supports Software Applications:

  • Troubleshoots and resolves issues surfaced through observability systems, user reports, or automated monitoring.

  • Contributes to installation, deployment, and developer documentation.

  • Writes tests that validate complex backend behavior and performance edge cases.

  • Diagnoses and resolves issues in distributed event-driven systems and microservices.

  • Participates in the full software lifecycle from ideation to long-term maintenance and support.

  • Works within an Agile development process focused on iterative value delivery to internal and external users.

Technical Skills

  • Professional experience in backend software development, experience developing interactive data products a plus

  • Strong working knowledge of relational databases, particularly PostgreSQL

  • Expertise in Python

  • Experience in Elixir, or Golang a plus

  • Experience building and optimizing REST APIs and working with event-driven architecture

  • Strong understanding of data modeling, query performance tuning, and systems design

  • Familiarity with distributed systems, microservices, and cloud infrastructure (Azure, AWS)

  • Ability to debug and optimize backend performance using modern observability tools

  • Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines, containerized applications, and infrastructure-as-code (e.g., Terraform, Kubernetes)

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in high-performing engineering teams

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field (or equivalent experience)

  • Demonstrated ability to architect and deliver scalable systems with minimal oversight

  • Comfortable operating at Software Engineer III level, including mentoring peers and leading system design discussions

The expected base salary for this position ranges from $81,000 to $108,000. It is not typical for offers to be made at or near the top of the range. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, licensure or certifications obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered. In addition to base salary and a competitive benefits package, successful candidates are eligible to receive a discretionary bonus or commission tied to achieved results.
