Job Description

Summary/objective

The Yard Hostler position is a key member of the Operations Team responsible for the safe operation of commercial vehicles, aligning trailers to dock doors, spotting trailers in the yard, and performing yard checks. Buffalo Rock assets include straight truck, single combination, double combinations, Ottawa, etc.

  • Regular and timely attendance is an essential function of this position. Position is required

    to work all hours necessary to ensure operations function is fulfilled, including nights,

    weekends, holidays.



  • Must be aware of all loaded and empty trailers within property and communicate information to warehouse personnel.
  • Responsible for all trailer moves.
  • Must ensure that the Shipping and Receiving dock is supplied with empty trailers for loading and pull loaded trailers from the dock to the appropriate location based on dock personnel operational requirements.
  • Radio communication with the dock office must be maintained to ensure smooth operation of trailer moves.
  • Ensure there are empty trailers on the dock and pull loaded trailers off dock doors when requested.
  • The position requires excellent communication skills, pay close attention to detail and understand our operation's logistics processes.



  • Must ensure that vehicle is properly maintained and serviced for safe and dependable operation and must complete required tractor and trailer DVIRs as per regulations.
  • Must safeguard the safety of all people, property and product on the yard while operating Ottawa/ moving equipment.
  • Must maintain yard organization as specified by the Warehouse manager.
  • Must work with Warehouse Supervisors, Regional Load manager, Penske Logistics personnel, and other drivers to insure the accurate and timely flow of empty trailers.
  • Place trailers in designated areas per trailer status, empty, storage, loaded for delivery and ensure all are plugged in properly to power supply.
  • Responsible for ensuring all trailers are properly chocked at all times while on the dock.
  • Prepare a handover report for the next shift Warehouse Coordinator.
  • Required to attend all drivers' meetings
  • Carry out other duties as assigned.
  • Responsible for continuous self-improvement through the knowledge and use of all Buffalo Rock provided training, either web-based, in-house, or any other provided method. Must successfully complete assigned training curriculum.
