Position Description
Fellow in Character and Leadership
Honors College
Funded by Educating for Character and Leadership, held in collaboration with Tuskegee University
Date: May 29, 2025

Salary Range: Hourly
Work Schedule: This is a part-time, non-exempt position; Monday-Friday, hours to be determined, 10-20 hours per week.

Essential Functions

Under the direction of the Honors College Director, Kathy J. Cooke, and in collaboration with Tuskegee University, the incumbent will support Cal State LA's Educating for Character Institute grant by contributing to the research, design, and development of character and leadership education initiatives. Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting research on character and leadership development frameworks and practices

  • Assisting in the creation of learning experiences, educational exemplars, and training materials

  • Collaborating with faculty, staff, and college leadership to support programmatic goals

  • Participating in planning meetings and research-related events

  • Communicating findings and project updates clearly and professionally

  • Supporting data collection, analysis, and reporting activities

  • Assisting with coordinating and facilitating workshops or focus groups

  • Performing general administrative tasks related to project support

Requirements
  • Must be a degree-seeking individual currently enrolled in or admitted to a Cal State LA undergraduate or graduate program

  • Demonstrated ability to follow directions, meet deadlines, and work independently and collaboratively

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English

  • Ability to engage effectively with faculty, staff, and peers in a diverse and multicultural academic environment

  • Genuine interest in or familiarity with research related to education, character development, or leadership studies

  • Professionalism and responsibility in completing assigned duties

Desired Qualifications
  • Proficiency in Spanish

  • Prior experience conducting academic or applied research

  • Experience working in group settings or collaborative project teams

  • Strong customer service orientation and excellent interpersonal skills

  • Ability to clearly present and communicate research findings to diverse audiences

  • Familiarity with standard office equipment and digital tools such as Google Workspace and Microsoft Office

  • Interest in contributing to initiatives that promote values-based education, leadership, and social responsibility

The incumbent must demonstrate an interest or ability in working in a multicultural/multiethnic environment. A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the UAS. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current UAS employees who apply for the position.
