JOB TITLE:

Baker I - Dining Services

JOB PURPOSE:

Perform entry-level baking tasks and assist with kitchen operations under direct supervision, ensuring quality, safety, and cleanliness in all areas of production.

*This position has a specific scheduled time Monday - Friday 8:30am to 5pm shift. May include some weekends or irregular hours during busy times.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Preparation and Set-up:
  • Follow work orders to prepare pans and baking equipment, including greasing, or lining pans and transporting them to workstations.
  • Weigh and measure ingredients as per recipes and prepare ovens for baking.
  • Prepare orders and ensure accurate inventory setup for daily operations (cash-op, EBB, campus carry-out, and catering).
  • Label and organize the baking production schedule to maintain efficiency.

Baking and Serving:
  • Operate ovens and other baking equipment, ensuring safe practices and clean work spaces.
  • Display baked goods properly, label them clearly, and ensure they are stored at correct temperatures for service.
  • Assist in basic baking techniques, including dough mixing, kneading, shaping, and cutting, while following safety and sanitation protocols.
  • Package and prepare items for the next day's orders.

Cleaning and Maintenance:
  • Regularly clean and sanitize the workstation, equipment, and utensils.
  • Ensure kitchen cleanliness by following proper food safety standards and cleaning schedules.
  • Assist with the maintenance of storage areas, such as walk-in coolers and freezers.

Equipment and Inventory:
  • Notify supervisors when supplies are running low.
  • Report any malfunctioning equipment to supervisors and maintain safe use of all tools and machinery.

Teamwork:
  • Work collaboratively with other kitchen staff, maintaining a sense of urgency while ensuring quality.

Be open to learning and adapting to new baking methods and products

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  • Participate in performance-related goal setting and achievement to meet personal and organizational goals and objectives.
  • Attend and participate in training and other personal professional development activities.
  • Assist with determining ingredient quantities necessary to fill specific food service orders.
  • Prepare baked goods for delivery by arranging products in proper containers; count and load goods onto caddies for delivery.
  • Assist in the preparation of made-to-order items including special frosting, icing and decoration of bakery goods.

WORK LOCATION ELIGIBILITY: This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience: No prior experience required; training provided

Required licensure, certification, registration, or other requirements: None

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Basic customer service skills.
  • Neat and clean appearance.
  • Understanding food safety.
  • Proper use of chemicals for cleaning.
  • Knife skills and safe use of knives.
  • Knowledge of different pans, their sizes, and proper use.
  • Familiarity with kitchen setup, including dry storage, refrigerators, freezers, and cooking stations.
  • Ability to operate and clean sinks and dish machines.
  • Professional interaction with staff.
  • Ability to read and write effectively.
  • Ability to follow instructions accurately.
  • Use basic math for quantity determination.
  • Obtain a Food Handler's Certificate.
