Primary Function of Organizational Unit |
The College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities is where culture and intellect meet. With majors in the social sciences, humanities and the arts, the college has a culture of collaboration that encourages students to discover their own path. The Department of Music offers a Bachelor of Music with concentrations in Jazz Performance, Performance, Education, and Music Industry. The Department's Jazz Studies Program including the Master of Music in Jazz Studies is one of the University's programs of distinction and is well-known throughout the nation. In addition to the degree programs, the Department houses several ensembles including the University Marching Band, the Symphonic Band, the University Choir, the Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combos, and the Vocal Jazz Ensemble. |
Primary Purpose of Position |
In collaboration with the faculty and staff, the Chair establishes the overall vision for the department in regard to teaching, research, service, and the general development of students and faculty. In addition, to managing and evaluating faculty and staff, the Chair serves as mentor to faculty colleagues and as a collaborator with other college administrative officers, interprets college policies, advocates for his or her department from a perspective of the best overall interests of the College and University, leads faculty in important processes that shape the curriculum and impacts student learning, and effectively articulates department and college missions to internal and external constituencies. The Chair is expected to seek the advice of faculty and provide for the conduct of departmental affairs in an orderly manner through department meetings, the appointment of appropriate committees, and keep department members informed of his or her actions in a timely fashion. The Chair is also expected to seek student feedback on matters of concern to those enrolled in the department's programs. |
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities |
Excellent written and oral communication skills. Evidence of a commitment to shared governance. The successful candidate must exhibit the ability to create an engaging teaching, learning, and scholarly/performance environment that promotes creativity, innovation, and the discovery of new knowledge. Candidates must display a commitment to student success that includes the recruitment, retention, graduation, and placement of undergraduate and graduate students. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to an open and collegial style of communication and management. Candidates must demonstrate a firm commitment to North Carolina Central University and the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities' mission to provide a quality education to a diverse student body. Have experience or understanding of Jazz performance or similar music genre. |
Minimum Education/Experience |
Candidates must have the PhD or
DMA in Music or music-related fields. Candidates must have an established record of effective teaching and scholarly activities and additional professional accomplishments consistent with the rank of associate or full professor with tenure. Candidates must have a demonstrated record of effective leadership experience in promoting excellence in teaching, research, service, curriculum development, program review and assessment, student and faculty administration, securing external funding and grantsmanship, and fiscal management. |

2. Work with Academic Affairs to develop new articulation agreements with colleges/universities, community colleges, and ensure that articulation agreements are current and in compliance with Memorandums of Understanding.
3. Develop and revise class schedules (including online course offerings) each semester and develop a two-year schedule of classes for program planning.
4. Enforce
NCCU and
UNC System policies, regulations and practices.
5. Perform duties as assigned by the College Dean, the Provost, and Chancellor.
6. Establish and maintain formal partnerships (e.g., MOUs) with relevant local, regional, and discipline-specific stakeholders to support professional opportunities for faculty and students.. |
