The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University located in Palisades, New York, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist position focusing on applying AI/ML methods to the analysis and understanding of marine heatwaves (MHWs). This postdoctoral researcher will work with Columbia Climate School and Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory researchers, in collaboration with data scientists from Learning the Earth with AI and Physics (LEAP), an NSF-funded Science and Technology Center at Columbia University.

Responsibilities will include:



  • Analyze data from observations and model simulations of extreme MHWs.
  • Apply AI/ML methods to unravel mechanisms of MHWs, their atmospheric and oceanic drivers in present and future climate.
  • Testing MHW mechanisms using one-dimensional ocean model and simple atmospheric models.


Candidates should have completed or be nearing completion of a PhD in climate and ocean sciences or related disciplines with training in using machine learning tools, such as CNNs and CENs.

The search will remain open for at least 30 days after the ad appears and will continue until the position is filled.

Initial appointment will be for one year, with continuation dependent on available funding and research progress.
