Pay Rate/Range: The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $29.48 to $38.19/hour. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University.

Department Marketing Statement:

Transportation & Parking Services (TPS) is part of Housing, Dining, and Auxiliary Enterprises (HDAE). TPS is an innovative and self-sustaining department that supports the UCSB mission by providing safe and reliable parking, fleet services and transportation alternatives to our campus community. TPS manages over 9,500 parking spaces and over 400 vehicles. TPS coordinates inbound and outbound traffic planning for all major campus events.

Brief Summary of Job Duties:

Performs comprehensive maintenance and repair on UCSB fleet vehicles (includes gasoline, E85, diesel, bio-diesel, natural gas, hybrid, and electric vehicles). Work ranges from simple maintenance to replacing components, with an emphasis on technician and customer safety. Performs technically advanced repairs on computer controlled vehicle systems using appropriate diagnostic equipment. Performs repairs to vehicle's mechanical components using appropriate shop tools & procedures. Performs preventative maintenance inspections and repairs. Performs vehicle emission testing. Provides customer service and roadside assistance as needed. Provides coverage in absence of the Garage Supervisor. Performs driving duties as assigned. Accurately documents all work performed. Completes repair orders promptly. Attends appropriate technical training classes on current and emerging automotive technology. Participation in ASE automotive certification is encouraged. Must be able to work as a member of a team and share in the responsibility for maintaining a safe and secure work environment.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience of performing comprehensive maintenance and repair on vehicles (includes gasoline, E85, diesel, bio-diesel, natural gas, hybrid, and electric vehicles).
  • Minimum 5 years of experience replacing components, with an emphasis on technician and customer safety. Performs technically advanced repairs on computer controlled vehicle systems using appropriate diagnostic equipment.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience performing preventative maintenance inspections and repairs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

  • 45% Vehicle Maintenance & Inspection - Inspects brakes, steering, suspension, tires, fuel, lighting, exhaust, drive train, interior and exterior vehicle systems for mechanical defects using the Safety Inspection Checklist as a guide. Performs scheduled vehicle services including changing fluids, filters, lubricating chassis and doors. Services transmissions, drive axles, and cooling systems. Checks wheel nuts for proper torque and adjusts brakes. Alerts Garage Supervisor to any non-routine safety deficiencies. Test drives vehicle before and after service. Performs vehicle emission inspections per California's Government Fleet Program.
  • 35% Vehicle Diagnosis & Repair - Diagnoses vehicle problems and performs needed repairs. Performs all necessary repairs to ensure proper vehicle operation & safety. Utilizes a wide range of shop tools & equipment, including advanced electronic diagnostic equipment. Alerts Garage Supervisor to any non-routine safety deficiencies. Test drives vehicle before and after repair. Installs accessory equipment per customer's specifications. Maintains high safety standards while performing work to ensure the safety of self, coworkers, and customers.
  • 10% Lead Duties - Provides coverage in absence of the Garage Supervisor. This may include: 1. Opening and closing shop 2. Assigning work to Automotive Technicians 3. Assisting Automotive technicians 4. Assisting the Reservations Desk 5. Answering customer questions 6. Following up with customers 7. Ordering parts 8. Keeping Manager informed of any important developments Completes documentation regarding work done on vehicles.
  • 5% Customer Service - Provides assistance and information to customers in a courteous and professional manner. Assists customers with vehicle dispatch. Provides roadside assistance to motorists. Analyzes the condition of the vehicle and provides immediate roadside repair when possible.
  • 5% Safety and Security - Uses safety equipment at all times in order to prevent injuries and responds promptly to shop emergencies. Provides assistance to other automotive technicians. Keeps the shop area orderly. Maintains security of shop equipment. Maintains security of assigned toolbox. Assists with shop clean-up.
