We are looking for a Mortgage Underwriter to join our team! The salary range for this position is $54,667.87 to 68,334.84 based on skills and experience. This position is classified as Hybrid.

As a dedicated member of the OnPath FCU team, this role performs a variety of tasks that in partnership with the surrounding departments, provides cost effective financial services for the benefit of our members who are our primary focus. PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:

Responsible for performing the credit analysis function including but not limited to receiving financial data on prospective and active borrowing accounts; analyzing data and evaluating short- and long-run prospects of the individual or company; providing thorough documentation of all financial analysis work, including financial spreads, ratios and other related information, recommending appropriate risk ratings, suggesting appropriate covenants, and providing recommendations on lending decisions. Working directly with borrowers and lenders, including Commercial and Residential, to verify information, obtain additional credit information, and to discuss financial statements; ensuring that all credit analysis activities and underwriting are conducted in accordance with lending policy and procedures. Additionally, maintaining awareness of current industry standards relating to credit analysis, regulatory changes, compliance processes and local economic trends. There is also responsibility for risk based and proactive monitoring and review of existing credits in the commercial portfolio and underwriting vendors involved with construction and development financing. Works directly with the Director of Risk on any Commercial Credits as it relates to concentration, limits, and overall sound credit recommendations..

Major Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Primary job function will be focused on developing and maintaining secondary market and all responsibilities associated with keeping secondary market in compliance and up to date with the latest products.
  • Assess overall credit worthiness and financial health of member and prospective member borrowers, related borrowers, guarantors, general contractors, builders, and other vendors as needed. Provide independent, in-depth analysis of borrower financial reporting, projections, and business plans; that clearly identify and mitigate key risks and provide high quality and responsive service to our members, member prospects, and internal business partners. Actively participate in meetings integral to the decisioning, monitoring and annual review of commercial loans. Perform thorough risk assessment identification & financial analysis of various types of lending proposals.
  • Reviews, validates, and underwrites Residential Loan applications and makes recommendations following secondary market underwriting guidelines as well as OnPath FCU policies and guidelines. Ensure compliance with internal credit union loan policy, secondary market, credit risk management policy and external regulatory requirements; documents any exceptions to policy and related rationale/mitigates.
  • Assist with commercial underwriting where applicable.
  • All responsibilities associated with keeping secondary market in compliance and up to date with the latest products.
  • Analyze financial information such as tax returns, debt schedules, balance sheets, income and cash flow statements, and periodic financial reporting of all types. Evaluate and properly value collateral values and calculate accurate LTVs.
  • Provide independent, in-depth analysis of borrower financial reporting, projections, and business plans; that clearly identify and mitigate key risks.
  • Identify additional credit union business and consumer product cross-sell opportunities during the underwriting process and share those with the Commercial Lender. Make timely reviews of draw and change order requests for construction and development loans then make appropriate funding recommendations to the Commercial Lender.
  • Provide high quality and responsive service to our members, member prospects, and internal business partners.
  • Proactively identify risk rating changes due to business performance deterioration or improvement during appropriate financial reviews. Stay informed of regulatory, policy and procedural requirements to ensure compliance throughout the underwriting and credit administration processes. Keep well informed as to market economic conditions as it relates to assessing credit risk.
  • Assist Lenders on member/prospect with more complex credits. Assists with commercial underwriting where applicable. Perform other duties as assigned by management of the credit union.

Knowledge and Skills
Experience:


  • 3-5 years of recent underwriting experience in the mortgage industry
  • Proficiency in conventional, FHA and VA loans
  • Experience with USDA and 203k is a plus
  • Basic understanding of underwriting requirements, governmental and agency requirements, terminology, and automated processing systems
  • Proficiency in income calculation
  • Computer proficiency, particularly with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience with mortgage software, such as Meridian Link, Empower, Encompass or other LOS


Certifications required:


  • DE
  • CHUMS
  • VA/SAR


Education:
Bachelor's degree in business, banking, or finance a plus.
Other Skills:
Is responsible for a width of information including but not limited to the organizations current mortgage loan interest rates, commitment/rate lock/relock fee procedures, consumer loan products/rates/guidelines that are used in conjunction with Mortgage Lending (Execulines, second mortgage products, swing loans, land loans, etc.), any loan origination software system.

Physical Requirements:
Perform primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and occasional lifting of up to 10 lbs. Must be capable of climbing / descending stairs in emergency situation. Must be able to operate routine office equipment including telephone, copier, facsimile, and calculator. Must be able to routinely perform work on computer for an average of 6-8 hours per day, when necessary. Must be able to work extended hours whenever required or requested by management. Must be capable of regular, reliable and timely attendance.
Working Conditions:
Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with minimal noise.
Mental and/or Emotional Requirements:
Must be able to perform job functions independently or with limited supervision and work effectively either on own or as part of a team. Must be able to read and carry out various written instructions and follow oral instructions. Must be able to speak clearly and deliver information in a logical and understandable sequence. Must be capable of dealing calmly and professionally with numerous different personalities from diverse cultures at various levels within and outside of the organization and demonstrate highest levels of customer service and discretion when dealing with the public. Must be able to perform responsibilities with composure under the stress of deadlines / requirements for extreme accuracy and quality and/or fast pace. Must be able to effectively handle multiple, simultaneous, and changing priorities. Must be capable of exercising highest level of discretion on both internal and external confidential matters.
