Position Overview

The following is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. This list of duties is illustrative only and is not a comprehensive listing of all the functions and responsibilities performed.

Position Summary:
Under direct supervision, this position is responsible for performing routine cleaning and maintenance tasks in university facilities and buildings. Duties are carried out in accordance with established standards, procedures, and instructions. This position reports directly to the Custodial Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Sweep, mop, and scrub floors, stairways (interior and exterior), and other surfaces as needed.
  • Operate light and industrial-grade floor machines and attachments.
  • Scrub, strip, wax, and polish floors using powered scrubbers, buffers, and other floor-care equipment.
  • Vacuum carpets and rugs in offices, hallways, and public areas; shampoo carpets periodically using appropriate equipment.
  • Dust and clean furniture, display cases, picture frames, door trims, chalkboards, and other surfaces.
  • Replace liners in wastebaskets and trash receptacles.
  • Clean interior walls manually or using powered wall-washing machines; may require the use of ladders or scaffolding.
  • Clean and restock restrooms, ensuring all bathroom supplies are replenished.
  • Clean and maintain cigarette urns and ashtrays.
  • Collect and dispose of trash and recyclables in designated containers or bags; transport to assigned disposal areas.
  • Report any observed maintenance issues, damage, or items requiring repair.
  • Perform additional custodial duties as assigned or required.

Requirements

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • One year of custodial experience.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must either possess or successfully complete the National Safety Council Defensive Driving Course (paid for by the employer).
  • Must successfully complete a physical examination prior to the employment start date (paid for by the employer).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Must possess a general knowledge of custodial services, practices, and procedures.
  • Familiarity with the proper use and care for janitorial supplies, chemicals, and equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Awareness of and adherence to safe working conditions and practices.
  • Physical ability to lift, carry, and move equipment and furniture on a regular basis.

Working Conditions

  • Work is primarily performed during normal business hours, with occasional evening and weekend shifts required to meet operational deadlines.
  • The work environment is often loud, due to equipment operation and building activity.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required sit, use hands to handle objects, tools, or controls; talk and hear.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Regularly required to bend, stoop, lift, and carry supplies or equipment.
  • Must occasionally lift and move objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision; peripheral vision, depth perception, the ability to adjust focus.
  • Regular exposure to fumes or airborne particles.
  • Frequent exposure to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration.
  • Occasional exposure to high, precarious places, outdoor weather conditions, and risk of electrical shock.
