About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is excited to welcome a skilled and passionate Landscape Architect to our Massachusetts team. This key role centers on leading projects that integrate environmental restoration with the design of accessible public spaces-including habitat restoration, native revegetation, and the creation of passive recreation areas and trails.

This is a great opportunity for an experienced landscape architect with a strong ecological foundation to deepen their impact in sustainability and environmental stewardship. Combining design, project management, and fieldwork. The Landscape Architect will contribute to meaningful projects that restore natural environments and foster community engagement.

Position levels and compensation include:

  • Assistant Project Landscape Architect - 3 years of related experience and expertise | Non-exempt, $31.05-$39.69/hour

  • Associate Project Landscape Architect - 5 years of related experience and expertise | Exempt, $68,016-$87,287.20/year

  • Project Landscape Architect - 7 years of related experience and expertise | Exempt, $77,084.80-$98,623.20/year

This is a full-time, regular-status position with benefits, based in our Amherst, Massachusetts office. Highly qualified candidates at the Project Landscape Architect level may be considered for remote or distributed work arrangements.


What you will accomplish

The minimum responsibilities for the Assistant Project Landscape Architect level are as follows:

  • Demonstrate technical and regulatory proficiency in design discipline
  • Lead projects/tasks from start to finish, with guidance
  • Execute routine technical tasks through others; independently performs novel problem-solving; may perform unique or challenging technical work/processes with guidance
  • Responsible for the content of project or task deliverables, including technical accuracy and presentation
  • Track scopes, milestones, schedules, and budgets
  • Develop strategy to meet shifting project needs, regulatory requirements, and client objectives
  • Perform frontline technical QA/QC of deliverables
  • Prepare draft scopes and budgets for small to medium projects, or contributes to large proposals
  • Is an active member in technical/industry organizations
  • With guidance, interfaces with clients and agencies related to specific tasks to ensure needs and objectives are met
  • Contributes to technical standards for office or sub-region
  • May supervise; coaches others within team or office
  • Prepares and ensures implementation of the safety plan

Experience and qualifications for success

Required Qualifications

  • B.A. or B.S. in Landscape Architecture, with a strong ecological emphasis.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in landscape design, habitat restoration planning and implementation.
  • A professional Landscape Architecture license or actively working towards licensure to be obtained within one year of hire.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Adobe Suite.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication, creative problem-solving skills, self-motivation, and ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team setting are essential.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Landscape Architecture or a related design field.
  • Independent capability in the development of new projects or leading business development efforts in collaboration with the Landscape Architecture Team Lead.
  • Ability to provide frontline QA/QC technical review based on expertise and project experience.
  • Familiarity with environmental policies, regulations, and restoration design and implementation constraints.
  • Experience with Land F/X software.
  • Knowledge of local ecology, plant communities, hydrology, soils, and species.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

  • Office-based work with standard office equipment. Occasional project site visits may involve challenging outdoor conditions.
  • Job requires working on a computer for extended periods, attending meetings, and conducting fieldwork under various conditions.

Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and othe.r factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
