Performs financial accounting and reporting processes for multiple bank general ledger accounts. Reconciliations include complex disbursement and depository accounts with monthly debit and credit volume of $120 million per account. Conducts analysis and reconciliation of bank accounts. Serves as backup to other staff members to ensure reconciliations are current. Works under the supervision of Accountant II.
Responsibilities include:
- Monitors accounting activities entered by various departments into the county's financial accounting system. Conducts complex reconciliations for disbursement and depository accounts. Identifies and resolves discrepancies on bank statements by liaising with agencies and bank officers. Advises on necessary journal entries to record bank activities.
- Oversees financial accounting and reporting for the county's primary account, handling wire transfer deposits/disbursements exceeding $70 million daily. Ensures accuracy and timeliness when posting electronic payments, including EDI payments from state and federal agencies.
- Serves as support to Accountant II and department staff, providing oversight as needed. Research accounting issues, new accounting pronouncements, and recommends solutions and methods of implementation. Creates and conducts training sessions for staff and county departments focused on reconciliation processes.
- Monitors the implementation of new bank reconciliation products and ensures the functionality of automated systems. Collaborates with integrated technology staff to maintain and enhance reconciliation tools.
- Leads the preparation of "Prepared by Client" (PBC) audit schedules for annual audit. Serves as the main contact for independent and internal auditors during the annual audit, ensuring timely provision of required information.
- Participates in and leads various departmental special projects, including but not limited to preparing unclaimed property filings with each state, ensuring that all reporting deadlines are met.
Note:
- Salary offer will not exceed the mid-point of the salary range $79,600.14.
- The telework policy for this position allows teleworking up to 40% of the weekly working schedule which generally equates to a maximum of 2 days a week teleworking and at least 3 days a week in the office at the Fairfax County Government Center in Fairfax, VA.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: (Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for "Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to") An accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in accounting; or a bachelor's degree in business administration or related field that has been supplemented by at least 12 credit hours of intermediate level accounting or higher.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and a credit check to the satisfaction of the employer. Certain positions with financial responsibility within this class may be subject to criminal background checks and/or credit checks as a condition of hiring and periodically thereafter, as determined by the department head. Applicants and employees within these select positions must demonstrate financial responsibility in personal finances as a condition of employment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Three (3) years of experience in account reconciliation or an equivalent combination of education and relevant training.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and internal controls.
- Excellent skills with MS Office (Word, Excel, MS Teams).
- Experience with Enterprise Resource Planning financial systems.
- Experience with handling high-volume transactions while maintaining excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Forward-thinking professional with a passion for learning and evolving in dynamic environments.
- CPA or other professional certification.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Job is generally sedentary in nature. Ability to read data on computer monitor, operate a keyboard driven equipment, and carry up to 15 lbs. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations. SELECTION PROCEDURE: Panel Interview and may include a practical exercise.
