A Brief Overview
The Obstetrics Tech assists the professional Nurse in performing direct and indirect patient care activities. The Technician works under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse/Circulating Nurse. Provides for the general comfort, safety and wellbeing of patients and supports the general function of the unit. Provides technical assistance in the services provided during the labor and delivery stages of the obstetrical process. Perform specialized procedures and treatments. Perform surgical procedures in the role of a Scrub Technician.

What you will do

  • The Obstetrics Technician functions in the scrub role during obstetric/fetal surgical procedures.
  • Collaborates with RN and physicians in developing a plan of care for each patient.
  • Collaborates with RN in maintaining a safe, organized, clean, and comfortable environment for patients.
  • Scrubs for routine and complex procedures.
  • Consistently demonstrates aseptic practice as defined in AORN Recommended Practices.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of anatomy, procedures, instrumentation, equipment, and supplies by anticipating the surgical needs at the field.
  • Assures that OR's are completely stocked and always prepared for emergency procedures, i.e. C-sections or laparotomy for bleeding.
  • Assists the physician and RN with monitoring and ongoing assessments throughout the surgical procedure.
  • Practices safety precautions throughout the perioperative phase of patient care.
  • The Obstetrics Technician provides direct patient care.
  • Assists the RN and Physicians with emergency situations.
  • Assists with transportation of patients as needed.
  • Provides a variety of tasks which include taking vital signs and other health support activities.
  • The Obstetrics Technician maintains the patient environment.
  • Prepares the labor and delivery rooms by setting up beds and tables and ensures the area is prepared for additional patient care.
  • Maintains the sterility of instruments and rooms according to established policies and procedures.
  • Assists in ordering and stocking of supplies and ensures that levels are maintained at the appropriate amounts.
  • Provides assistance in preparations for procedures and the clean-up afterwards.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
  • The Obstetrics Technician practices safety precautions throughout the perioperative phase of patient care.
  • Handles all "sharps" in a safe and protective manner in consideration of self and others in supportive roles, such as, core techs, environmental services, and CPD staff.
  • Participates in "time-outs" prior to the start of the surgical procedure according to hospital policy guidelines.
  • Verifies medications, concentrations, expiration dates of all medications received on the sterile field in concert with the circulating RN.
  • Handles and dispenses medications, irrigation solutions, and flushes (e.g., epi: 1:1000, local anesthetics, antibiotic irrigation) to surgeon within the sterile field.
  • Handles, prepares, and dispenses hemostatic agents (e.g., thrombin, tisseel, floseal) to the surgeon within the sterile field.
  • Accountable for the disposal of all biohazardous materials and sharps.
  • The Obstetrics Technician contributes to unit and own learning.
  • Able to identify own learning needs. Seeks out opportunities to meet needs and attends all required programs.
  • Consistently participates in staff meetings and programs to improve Perioperative skills.
  • Applies education and training from internal in-services to daily work to enhance personal knowledge and skills.
  • Completes, documents, and reports all mandatory education and training.
  • Participates in unit/hospital councils as requested.

Education Qualifications

  • High School Diploma / GED - Required
  • Technical Diploma Scrub Technician - Preferred

Experience Qualifications

  • At least one (1) year operating room experience Required
  • Previous experience working in OB practice setting - Preferred

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate clearly in English, both verbally and in writing. (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to prioritize and organize tasks according to Unit's needs. (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships. (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to work under pressure. (Required proficiency)

Licenses and Certifications

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - issued through on organization that requires a hands-on instructor lead psychomotor skills verification (ex. American Heart Association or Red Cross). - within 6 months - Required

$27.35 - $34.19 Hourly

Salary ranges are shown for full-time jobs. If you're working part-time, your pay will be adjusted accordingly.
