GENERAL SUMMARY: A Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP) is an allied healthcare professional who is trained to evaluate the acute and chronic responses to exercise in apparently healthy individuals and those who are at-risk or have established chronic disease, and to implement behavior change techniques to promote adherence to healthy lifestyles. CEPs work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team where they administer exercise stress tests, supervise clinic-based exercise training programs for patients with various complex chronic diseases, and provide physical activity consultation. CEPs provide services to patients with cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, renal, endocrine, orthopedic, musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, neoplastic, immunologic, and hematologic diseases. CEPs are trained to obtain a medical history through patient interview and review of the medical record; review medications with patients; assess symptoms and vital signs; measure heart rate, blood pressure, blood glucose, and interpret ECGs during rest and exercise. They make point-of-care assessments, provide patient surveillance, and communicate with physicians and other healthcare providers as needed. CEPs are core staff in the exercise stress testing laboratory and a variety of clinical exercise training programs. These programs include, but are not limited to, Cardiac Rehabilitation, Pulmonary Rehabilitation, Supervised Exercise Therapy for Symptomatic Peripheral Artery Disease, and the Exercise and Cancer Integrative Therapy Education Program. They also provide physical activity counseling in the Clinical Weight Management Program and Bariatric Care Services. These programs may be delivered in-person or through telehealth. Within these settings CEPs provide innovative and specialized care to a variety of specific populations including the elderly, frail adults, children, and those with intellectual disabilities.
