Mechanical Nuclear Engineer III/Sr - Operational Support Engineering - Mechanical (Brunswick Nuclear Plant)

***This position can be hired as either an Engineer III or Sr Engineer depending on experience***

Summary

This position is for an experienced Mechanical Engineer within the Operational Support Engineering (OSE) - Mechanical Group. The Duke Energy Brunswick Nuclear Plant OSE group is responsible for mechanical system engineering for the station. OSE-Mechanical is responsible for monitoring and trending, work prioritization, troubleshooting, cause evaluations and long-term asset management for multiple systems at the site.

The Brunswick OSE-Mechanical team works closely with design engineering, operations, work management and maintenance to ensure optimal engineering solutions are developed to meet plant needs. The team collaborates with these other departments, and station management, to ensure high quality solutions and priorities are delivered, consistently, within established nuclear processes and standards.

This senior engineering role involves independently handling complex tasks with minimal supervision. Employees are expected to master advanced skills, apply fundamental concepts, and manage specialized projects, seeking guidance only for exceptional issues. They are fully proficient in problem-solving, solution development, and implementation.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates high conduct of safety culture (personal, nuclear and environmental).
  • Monitor and trend system performance with the intent to identify issues in a preventative space versus a reactive one.
  • Provide input to station management regarding priority of work to be performed on systems to ensure long term reliability.
  • Review system maintenance window scope, including corrective and preventative maintenance, and provide input to work management to prioritize work while minimizing system unavailability.
  • Work with Operations and Maintenance personnel to solve emergent plant issues.
  • Conduct formal self-assessments and benchmarking to ensure Brunswick engineering performance remains the industry best.
  • Lead, or support, Brunswick Engineering during internal and external audits and inspections.
  • Conduct plant walkdowns and inspections as required for license renewal and other program support activities.
  • Provide general Mechanical Engineering and emergent issue support during plant outages.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with Maintenance and Operations personnel to solve complex and challenging plant issues.
  • Participation in industry groups to share operating experiences and lessons learned.

Basic Qualifications

Nuclear Engineer III

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • A Master 's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
  • 4-6 years of engineering experience.
  • Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience.

Sr Nuclear Engineer

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • A Master's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited school will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.
  • Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program will be considered in lieu of a B.S engineering degree.
  • Proficient in engineering theories and principles.
  • Experience in the utility industry.
  • State registration as a Professional Engineer.
  • Willingness to work in industrial environments with Maintenance and Operations personnel.
  • Collaborative mentality that supports teamwork and a willingness to assist other departments and teammates.
  • Self-starter with exceptional work ethic.

Special Requirements

  • In lieu of 1 year of nuclear experience, a selected candidate is subject to the oversight and written approval authority of a designated qualified individual until the selected candidate becomes fully qualified.
  • Able to achieve and maintain nuclear site Unescorted Access/Security clearance.
  • This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.
  • Additional hours expected as workload/business need requires including refueling outage and support of emergent plant issues.
  • Occasional overnight travel.

Working Conditions

  • Typically, an office environment with some work in the plant to conduct system walkdowns and field support of Maintenance and Operations.
  • The work week is Monday - Thursday, 10-hour days. Fridays and weekends may be required to support emergent plant issues/needs. After completion of initial training and/or obtaining applicable qualifications, the candidate may work a hybrid schedule - two days onsite, two days remote.
  • Hybrid Mobility Classification- Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.
  • Occasional travel may be required to support industry meetings/benchmarking opportunities (<5% travel).
