Equine Surgery Technical Coordinator (ANML HEALTH TCHN 2 VMTH)

Under general supervision of the Equine Surgery Service Supervisor, this position will involve acting as a technical coordinator for the Equine Surgery Services. Responsibilities include facilitating scheduling of Equine Elective Surgery and Lameness, Equine Emergency Surgery, Farrier, Equine Integrative Sports Medicine, Equine Sports Medicine and advanced imaging, and specialty service(s) patients for appointments and client/RDVM communication within the Equine Surgery Services. This position will also receive patients and may obtain a history, conduct physical exam, and provide routine & emergency care for large animals, primarily horses, llamas & alpacas. Observe emergent/critically ill patients. Administer medications, fluids & treatments; tranquilizers, anesthetics, transfusions & oxygen therapy.

RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the apply by date.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

• Must obtain a Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance Permit (VACSP) within 3 months of date of hire.
• No minimum education requirement.
• Extensive experience handling, restraining & working with horses (healthy, sick, sedated, fractious) of all types and temperaments to ensure safety & effectiveness & anticipate potential problem horses & dangerous situations.
• Experience with equine husbandry, anatomy, and basic physiology. Ability to identify abnormal physical signs and appearances.
• Experience using computer programs including but not limited to; Microsoft Word, Excel, Office.
• Experience with aseptic techniques, medication administration, fluids commonly used in equine, performing mathematical calculations to calculate doses, bandaging and wound care, basic technical diagnostic and patient care procedures.
• Skill to independently coordinate and organize all administrative responsibilities to maximize the efficiency within the Equine Medicine service; work effectively to achieve timely progress and maintain a high level of productivity.
• Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to clearly and effectively interact with a diverse group of people to include clients, RDVM's, clinicians, students, and staff: develop and facilitate collaborative working relationships.

Preferred Qualifications

• Current CA Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license.
• Experience using VMTH systems including VMACS, AGFA.
• Knowledge of VMTH admissions, records, cashiering policies and procedures affecting services, clients, and confidentiality of records and information.
• Experience coordinating multiple schedules in a fast-paced dynamic environment with multiple responsibilities and conflicting priorities.
• Knowledge of equine tranquilizers.* Knowledge of pre-surgical procedures, including areas to be prepared, and the established protocol for animals to be anesthetized.

The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) is a unit that provides clinical case material in support of the teaching programs throughout the School of Veterinary Medicine on a 24-hour basis. Its primary objectives are to train professional (veterinary) students, graduate clinical students (interns and residents), and graduate academic students; to provide veterinary services to the public; to serve as a referral center for practicing veterinarians, and to advance veterinary medical knowledge.

This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy. Work occasional overtime as a result of emergency situations. Working hours are variable and include primary and on call shifts (day, swing, and grave), weekdays, weekends, holidays and academic vacations with emphasis on grave (overnight) shifts. Work weeks may include varied shifts throughout the week/weekend. If scheduled on call, must be able to report to work within 45 minutes following call. This position may at times, require the incumbent to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present, including zoonotic diseases, cleaning chemicals and radioactive patients. At times work alone at night in isolated areas and travel through dark areas of the clinic compound. No eating or drinking in surgery, treatment or procedure rooms and some other areas of the hospital. Work in crowded areas where strong odors are present, where exposure to bodily fluids and waste from domestic farm animals may occur.
