Job Description

POSITION PURPOSE

An employee in this class examines and diagnosis dental conditions and maintains the dental wellbeing of the patient. This employee examines medical histories, diagnosis dental disease/malfunctions, prescribes drugs, and performs other diagnostic procedures as necessary.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND RESULTS

  • Provides supervision for students while they provide dental services at the MSU-M dental clinic.
  • Provides patient exams as needed and instructs students on professional exam protocol.
  • Performs intraoral/extraoral exams and examines hard and soft tissues to determine correct documentation and to determine extent of care that is needed
  • Orders and reviews radiographs and recommends specific medications as needed.
  • Reviews medical histories and ensures information is documented correctly.

  • Complete annual required training. Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the smooth functioning of the department and maintain the reputation of the organization as a viable business partner. .

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current license or eligibility for license to practice dentistry in the State of Minnesota (once attained, must be kept current).

  • Current CPR certification.

Preferred Qualification

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of general dentistry.

  • Considerable knowledge of digital software and digital radiography.

  • Considerable knowledge of the techniques involved and the skill in diagnosing and treating a wider variety of dental diseases and injuries.

  • Considerable knowledge of recent developments in the field of general dentistry and dental pharmacology.

  • Communicate with staff, students, patients and other dental personnel.

  • Instruct student dental assistants in treatment of patients.

This Position Reports to: The Dean of Career and Technical Education and Health Sciences. Takes lead work direction from the Dental Assisting Instructor/Program Director

Supervises: Dental Assisting students

Internal and External Clientele and Purpose of Contact (the most significant job-related contacts)

This position works significantly with senior dental assisting students in a clinical setting for the purpose of education and supervision of students in patient care.

PROBLEM SOLVING (most difficult types of problems to resolve and consequence of error/non-resolution)

This person must be able to develop a treatment plan based on results of assessment done by studentsand self that meet the oral health needs of the patient. Individual must act as a liaison between the patientand other oral health specialists or other health care organization.

Decision(s) Position Makes and Decision(s) Referred to Higher Authority

This individual may follow the scope of practice for dentists licensed in Minnesota as determined by the Minnesota Board of Dentistry. The individual will make the final decision on how the treatment plan for the patient will be carried out.

All employees must comply with department and institution procedures and policies. MinnState policies and procedures, as well as local, state and federal laws, regulations, guidelines and business and industry standards.

This position works approximately 40 hours per year.
