Job Description

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) is seeking a mission-driven Electrical Engineer to join the team behind DSV Alvin, the world's most iconic human-occupied deep-sea submersible. From historic discoveries at hydrothermal vents to new explorations at 6,500 meters below the ocean's surface, Alvin continues to push the boundaries of science and engineering.

This is a regular, full-time, exempt position that is eligible for full benefits. The successful candidate would first participate in an Alvin overhaul that will take place from November 2025 through May 2026 (at WHOI) before returning to the standard at-sea position. Typically, you'll spend six to eight months a year at sea, supporting deep sea missions aboard one of the world's most iconic submersibles.

After a hands-on training period, you'll take on maintenance responsibilities with growing independence and expand into key support roles. For those who excel, there's a path into the Alvin Pilot-in-Training program, a thrilling step toward becoming an Alvin Pilot-in-Command, exploring some of the most remote parts of our planet.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

As an Electrical Engineer, you'll maintain and troubleshoot electrical and electronic systems that support the safe and reliable operation of Alvin. You'll work both independently and as part of a tight-knit team. Responsibilities include:

  • Maintain and repair submersible electronics (digital/analog circuits, motor controllers, battery systems, power distribution, serial/data systems).

  • Support integration and testing of scientific equipment and sensors.

  • Perform fiber-optic system maintenance.

  • Use test equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, fiber testers) to troubleshoot issues.

  • Participate in all phases of the vehicle launch, recovery and surface support activities.

  • Successfully complete all required training to qualify as an Alvin Support Technician, including roles such as support swimmer, launch coordinator, launch system operator, and surface coordinator.

  • Document procedures, maintenance reports, and system performance.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • As deemed necessary by supervisor

MINIMAL QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering or other appropriate discipline with minimal work experience, or evidence of an established specialized engineering skill gained through experience in the absence of a formal degree.

Experience:

  • 2-5 years of hands-on experience in electrical/electronic system maintenance. Submersible, ROV, or AUV experience is a plus.

Technical Skills:

  • Strong troubleshooting ability with analog/digital circuits

  • Familiarity with Windows/Linux, serial/network communication, embedded systems

  • Proficiency with the use of electronic test equipment

  • Experience documenting maintenance and system performance

Additional Qualifications:

  • Self-motivated with meticulous attention to detail

  • Comfortable working in challenging environments as part of a collaborative team.

  • Willingness to travel and work for up to 8 months/year at sea

Special Requirements:

  • Must be a US Citizen and current US passport holder

  • Must be able to acquire a TWIC card

  • Sea duty required

  • Ability to swim with mask/snorkel and dive fins in an open ocean environment

  • Must be able to pass a physical examination with equivalent standards to the FAA 3rd class pilot physical

Physical Requirements:

Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to, ability to lift less than 25 lbs independently, 2-3 times per day; carry 25-50 lbs, 3-4 times per day. Visual abilities to include near, far, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to distinguish basic colors. Ability to ascend/descend a vertical ladder through a 20" diameter hatch opening. Hearing requirements include the ability to hear and respond to instructions, communicate effectively in loud areas (pier/dock, warehouse).Other physical tasks include occasional prolonged standing/walking; use of hands for basic /fine grasping and manipulation, repetitive motion, reaching above and below the shoulders, pushing, pulling, kneeling, bending, twisting, and stooping. Other occupational requirements include talking, traveling, working around others, and with others. Will be exposed to dust or other irritants and electrical/mechanical/power equipment hazards.Physicalduties are subject to change
