Lead Assembly Technician - Aerospace

The Lead As sembly Technician performs the assembly or sub-assembly of aerospace parts using drills, rivet tools, and other hand tools. Technicians verify compliance with customer requirements using calipers, gauges, and other measuring & inspection tools. Technicians must follow established procedures and work instructions to complete work in an efficient and timely manner while maintaining safe practices and high quality. The lead role takes responsibility for training new employees, mentoring their development, and performing inspections of their work, and for miscellaneous administrative tasks as directed by the Supervisor. The lead may act as interim supervisor in the Supervisor's absence.

  • Trains new employees and mentors skill development during the introductory period for new hires
  • Communicates professionally and appropriately to convey information, deliver instructions, and demonstrate procedures
  • Assembles product per documentation and directions provided
  • Operates hand tools including drills, rivet guns, screwdrivers, etc.
  • Utilizes tape measure, mics, calipers, and other gauges to accurately interpret part measurements in accordance with customer specifications
  • Visually assesses parts for missing or incomplete operations
  • Maintains quantities and operation accountability on the manufacturing control plan
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe work area
  • Verifies equipment is operating correctly and safely; perform basic troubleshooting and maintenance as appropriate
  • Follows directions consistently and accepts responsibility for his/her actions and work product
  • Complies with applicable manufacturing processes, work procedures, and supervisor instructions
  • Adheres to safety guidelines and procedures; proactively identifies job hazards and collaborates with leadership to minimize hazards and ensure employee safety
  • Regular attendance on-site at the workplace is required


Required Education and Work Experience


  • HS Diploma or GED is required
  • Vocational training in a hands-on manufacturing career or similar field is preferred
  • Minimum 2 years previous experience in mechanical assembly is required
  • Experience with tools such as height gauges, drills, rivet guns, and other hand tools is required


Other Required Skills and Abilities


  • Ability to read and understand customer prints, drawings, and specifications
  • Ability to accurately use mics, calipers, gauges, and other measurement instruments
  • Professional verbal and written communication (English)
  • Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • To perform the essential functions of the role, employees must be able to perform the following activities with or without reasonable accommodations:
  • Regularly stand and walk throughout the facility, stand for long periods to perform job duties
  • Regularly lift, carry (short distances), and push/pull up to 50 pounds
  • Occasionally climb steps, stairs, or ladders
  • Occasionally bend, crawl, stoop, squat, or knee
  • Accurately distinguish colors to respond to sensors, indicators, and color-variable dashboards
  • Visual acuity to interpret readings on gauges and other measuring devices
  • Use hands and fingers to operate hand tools, fit parts together, and manually inspect and assess parts
  • Use hands and fingers to precisely fit small parts together and install and tighten fasteners, sometimes within confined and difficult-to-reach component constraints


Working Conditions
Work is performed in a manufacturing shop environment where working conditions may vary significantly; the employee will be exposed to:


  • Excessive noise (hearing protection required)
  • Dust, smoke, fumes/vapors (occasionally)
  • Extreme temperatures (occasionally)
  • Hazardous equipment including forklifts, hand tools, cranes or other lifting devices, and other equipment used in a machine shop environment


The use of PPE, including hearing protection, eye and hand protection, and use of safety footwear is required
