Works on categories of broad and diverse complexity where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Contacts are both internal and external to the department at all levels.

The Category Manager performs and oversees strategic sourcing activities for a particular category as member of the strategic sourcing team. This position is responsible for creating and executing against a sourcing strategy. They collaborate with clinical and non-clinical service line leaders to align sourcing and contracting efforts and policy initiatives for the health system. This includes setting the sourcing strategy, building relationships with key stakeholders, developing and maintaining relationships with vendors, and negotiating contracts. They partner closely with clinicians to determine product value and set focus on variation management and use including new product introductions. The Category Manager specializes in a specific set of clinical or non-clinical areas (e.g., OR, CV/IR, Acute Care, Ambulatory, Clinical, Support Services, Capital, etc.)

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $115,400 - $173,100 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Health Supply Chain Department plays a critical role in supporting the organization's mission of advancing health worldwide by ensuring the efficient, cost-effective, and timely procurement of goods and services across the health system. The department oversees all aspects of purchasing, contracting, sourcing, logistics, inventory management, and supplier relations, with a strong focus on quality, compliance, and sustainability. As a strategic partner to clinical, research, and administrative departments, Supply Chain is instrumental in driving operational excellence, reducing costs, and enhancing patient care outcomes through data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement. The team operates within a complex academic medical center environment, requiring strong collaboration across UCSF Health, UCSF campus, and UC system-wide initiatives.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's Degree in business management, supply chain management, or related field required
  • 5+ years supply chain or sourcing experience
  • Well-honed negotiation skills and solid contract review ability
  • Demonstrates creativity and initiative to problem solve and improve results with reduced cost or improved efficiency
  • Strong information analysis and business case development skills
  • Ability to facilitate and build relationships with internal customers; ability to work with clients on innovation and on supplier market
  • Domain knowledge of internal business
  • Familiarity with ERP and supply chain systems
