About the Job

Our large advising team needs support during times of transition on our teams. We are seeking an individual that can work in this position to help bridge the gaps when we have team members out on leave, transitioning between positions, and during peak advising times. We are seeking an individual that is available on a regular schedule up to 12 hours a week
during the academic year.

CLA Advising serves over 12,600 undergraduate students. This position works in our Johnston Hall Advising office, located on the East Bank of the UofM Twin Cities Campus. Our Advisors work holistically with students supporting academic and developmental growth. We work with students in over 60 majors guiding them through entering the college, choosing a major and balancing academic rigor and demands through their academic careers to timely graduation. This role will support advisors and help serve our students as the central navigators in connecting to resources on our large campus. This role will work with students from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.

Opportunities

  1. Receive training regarding academic advising techniques, applications, digital tools, and undergraduate degree progress issues relevant to liberal arts students through in-person training and advising appointment observations.
  2. Conduct individual drop-in advising appointments to assist students with general questions regarding major and degree requirements, registration, adding/canceling/withdrawing from classes, academic policies and exceptions, and campus support and department referrals.
  3. Conduct full advising appointments with undergraduate students.
  4. Potentially support a temporary advising caseload of undergraduate students.
  5. Participate in transfer student orientation by facilitating orientation sessions and assisting students on course planning and registration.
  6. Potentially conduct research, analyze data, and other special projects as appropriate that help promote, clarify, and advance advising practices.
  7. Support CLA Advising events as appropriate, examples include: Welcome Week activities, orientation, first year experience workshops, career readiness events.

Logistics of Position:

  • Paid hourly at the rate of $28/hr
  • Approximately 12 hours per week
  • This position is for 1 academic year (Fall 2025 - Spring 2026)
  • Approximately 60 hours during Spring Orientation (January)
  • Flexible work and hour arrangements; hybrid service modality
Qualifications

Required:

  • Completed Bachelor's degree
  • Proven ability to work effectively with people from different backgrounds and cultures.
  • Skills in utilizing technology for work responsibilities, such as zoom, google docs, sheets & forms and email.

Preferred:

  • Candidates have a desire to focus on academic advising in a higher education setting.
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $28.00 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
