Description

Metra is one of the nation's largest and most complex commuter rail systems, connecting six counties in Northeastern Illinois with safe, reliable, and efficient service. The Mechanical Department plays a critical role in achieving Metra's mission by managing the inspection, repair, and maintenance of 1,180 rail vehicles to ensure compliance with the highest safety and performance standards.

The Chief Mechanical Officer (CMO) provides strategic leadership and operational oversight of the Mechanical Department. This includes managing over 30 field service, inspection, and maintenance facilities and guiding a workforce responsible for a fleet of over 1,200 vehicles including locomotives, passenger coaches, maintenance-of-way equipment, and electric multiple units (Highliners).

The final salary will depend on the candidate's qualifications. Those with 8 years or more of required experience can expect offers up to the midpoint of the salary range. Metra provides full pay ranges so candidates can consider their growth potential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and direct department operations, ensuring the safe, compliant, and efficient maintenance of Metra's rolling stock.
  • Oversee and support director-level managers in scheduling, inspecting, repairing, and overhauling rail vehicles.
  • Oversees the department's Capital Work Plan, assigning responsibilities, approving timelines and schedules, evaluating progress, supporting and resolving project and program challenges.
  • Direct the development and administration of the departmental budget, approving expenditures and overseeing staffing and procurement needs.
  • Align mechanical operations with Metra's strategic goals and ensure adherence to federal, state, and local regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and implement operational policies and procedures that improve safety, environmental responsibility, and productivity.
  • Guide leadership development and training programs for department staff; provide coaching, evaluate performance, and address staffing needs.
  • Ensure a culture of safety and accountability, reinforcing regulatory compliance and internal safety initiatives.
  • Serve as a key liaison with internal departments, industry partners, regulatory agencies, and peer organizations.
  • Be available 24/7/365 to support emergency operations, service restoration, or critical issues.

Requirements
  1. Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Maintenance Management, Business Management, Transportation, or related field
    (OR an equivalent combination of education and experience totaling four years in a related field)
  2. 12+ years of progressive experience in engineering, vehicle repair/maintenance, or a similar technical environment
  3. 6+ years of direct supervisory experience, including hiring, training, conflict resolution, performance management, and budgeting
  4. Comprehensive knowledge of engineering standards, FRA regulations, and railroad operations
  5. Experience managing large-scale, multi-location technical operations
  6. Strong leadership, communication, and team development skills
  7. Proficiency in Microsoft 365
  8. Valid driver's license and ability to travel throughout and beyond the Metra service area
  9. Must be able to work in both office and field environments under varying weather conditions
  10. Must be on-call 24/7/365, including weekends and holidays
  11. Preferred Qualifications

  12. Master's degree in a related field
  13. Experience in rail, transportation, or heavy manufacturing
  14. Knowledge of federal and industry rail maintenance standards
  15. Experience with capital project implementation and strategic fleet planning

Additional Requirements

  1. Must be able to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods
  2. Visual acuity and hearing adequate to perform safety-sensitive duties
  3. Must be able to lift and move up to 20 pounds and operate a vehicle
  4. Marijuana use is strictly prohibited, even if legal in the state, in accordance with Metra's zero-tolerance policy
