The Medical Coding Supervisor oversees the operations and personnel within the Medical Coding department. This role involves reviewing electronic encounter documentation to verify that provider-assigned codes are accurate, adhere to established coding protocols, and comply with applicable guidelines. The supervisor also supports practitioners and their staff by offering coding education and guidance on documentation standards and may participate in research projects related to medical coding.



This position is responsible for auditing insurance claims to identify potential coding errors and investigating coding regulations to address claim denials. The Medical Coding Supervisor manages the coding team by handling recruitment, onboarding, and training of new staff; evaluating employee performance; recommending further training as needed; and ensuring adequate staffing levels to meet workflow demands, including during staff absences. Additional responsibilities include developing departmental policies and procedures, leading staff meetings to communicate updates and resolve issues, handling customer inquiries or complaints, and representing the department in relevant organizational meetings. The position reports to the Revenue Cycle Manager and functions with general supervision.

Job Specific Minimum Qualifications



  1. High school graduation or equivalent is required.
  2. Graduation from an accredited Medical Coding Specialist Program or equivalent combination of education and/or relevant work experience is required.
  3. Minimum of two (2) to three (3) years of medical coding experience is required.
  4. Knowledge of insurance processing is preferred.
  5. Current CPC credential through AAPC or equivalent is required.
  6. Knowledge of CPT/HCPCS (supplies and pharmaceuticals), ICD-10-CM, E/M (evaluation and management), medical records and documentation is required.
  7. At least (2) years of supervisory or team lead experience in a healthcare environment. Knowledge of the principles and practices of accounting/fiscal management, business operations and human resource management. Demonstrated leadership experience in an insurance or healthcare environment is highly desirable.
  8. Ability to lead and participate in the training and supervision of other staff is required.
  9. Knowledge of medical terminology, basic anatomy, physiology, and disease process is required.
  10. Knowledge of Medicare and Medicaid and other payer-specific rules and regulations is required.
  11. Minimum of one (1) year of experience interacting with practitioners regarding coding requirements is preferred.
  12. Knowledge of or ability to learn various computer programs such as MS Office Suite, word processing, database, calendar and email is required. Knowledge of or ability to learn and effectively use systems including electronic medical record and electronic coding systems is required. Experience with EPIC is highly desirable.
  13. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required. Excellent customer service skills and the ability to work with a diverse patient population is required.
  14. Ability to work harmoniously and cooperatively with all staff and the public is required.
  15. Ability to ensure that the daily work of the department is completed.
  16. Ability to identify coding needs and code accurately is required.
  17. Ability to concentrate and maintain accuracy in spite of frequent interruptions is required.
  18. Excellent organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills are required.
  19. Ability to recognize, identify, and report problems is required.
  20. Ability to maintain personnel related and patient confidentiality is required.
  21. Knowledge of or ability to learn HIPAA requirements.
  22. Ability to negotiate with individuals, including practitioners, is required.
  23. Ability to be flexible and be a team player is required.
  24. Ability to adhere to OSHA standards and other patient care protocols is required.
  25. Ability to see at near and mid- range is required.
  26. Ability to use a keyboard regularly is required.
  27. Ability to travel among GHC sites on short notice is required.
  28. Manual dexterity, including the ability to perform fingering and handling with both hands is required.
  29. Ability to intermittently sit, stand, bend, stoop and stretch is required.
