About the Job

Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled programmer to work full-time in the Zaidi Lab at the University of Minnesota. Broadly, we are interested in understanding the evolution and genetic basis of human disease. For this purpose, we analyze large amounts of genomic and phenotypic data that requires writing computer programs that can read and wrangle various data types (e.g. summary statistics from genome-wide association studies and next generation sequencing output), carry out statistical computation, and output relevant information. We need a motivated individual with a background in computer science, bioinformatics, or related fields, to write computer programs to carry out such tasks in an efficient manner. The successful candidate will have knowledge in programming, preferably in Python, experience working in a Unix environment. They will be independent, motivated, and highly organized and will help the investigator, postdoctoral fellows in the lab, and students to develop and execute computational pipelines and tools to analyze genomic data.

Essential Functions:

Create computationally efficient tools (in Python, R, and bash) to organize, manage, and analyze genomic and genome-wide association study datasets using massively parallel computing infrastructure in the Minnesota Supercomputing Institute (MSI) and Google Cloud (50%)

Assist PI, postdoctoral fellow, and students with similar computational tasks and help develop production-ready code and pipelines for publication. (30%)

Organize data, code, and scripts on MSI, Google Cloud, and Zaid lab GitHub repository and keep documentation (20%).

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
BA/BS degree plus at least 5 years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant work experience to equal at least 9 years.

Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications: BA/BS degree in Computer Science or related field with proficiency and experience in Python, R, and bash and experience with git/github.

About the Department

GCD:

The Department of Genetics, Cell Biology, and Development (GCD) spans a broad spectrum of biological disciplines, including the storage and expression of information (genetics), its translation into the workings of individual cells (cell biology), and the assembly of cells into tissues and organ systems (development).

Our vision for the future of the department embraces three critical strategies: 1) integration of methods and ideas across disciplines, 2) collaborative projects that assemble the people required to achieve that integration, and 3) strategic use of model systems that provide the most powerful experimental access to important biological and medical problems. With our uniquely diverse expertise, these approaches allow us to build upon innovative basic science and to translate fundamental discoveries into direct benefits for society.
