Associated Press

The Associated Press is an independent global news organization dedicated to factual reporting. Founded in 1846, AP today remains the most trusted source of fast, accurate, unbiasednews in all formats and the essential provider of the technology and services vital to the news business. More than half the world's population sees AP journalism every day.

The Associated Press is looking to fill a critical, multi-skilled role that is pivotal to the success of our Global Safety: Risk and Resilience function. We seek a motivated self-starter who is collaborative, empathetic, inclusive and passionate with experience working on safety and security, ideally including some experience with journalists or press freedom issues.

The overall aim of the Global Safety: Risk and Resilience function is to keep AP journalists safe in the face of war, civil unrest, online attacks, identity-based violence and other evolving threats within the modern media landscape. The successful candidate should be passionate about helping colleagues break major news while mitigating risks and developing commensurate controls to enable our journalists to deliver the world's biggest stories.

Responsibilities: In this role, based in either our New York headquarters or our Washington bureau, you will keep the AP and its journalists safe. Reporting to the director of Americas safety, you'll be responsible for helping to manage and carry out physical, digital and psychological safety and resilience projects, collaborating with the wider GSRR team and other key stakeholders, including News, Cyber Security, Legal and HR.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Lead on pre-deployment and urgent deployment planning with U.S.-based teams, including through developing documentation and processes with key interlocutors.
  • Engage with all U.S. bureaus and manage the inventory of GSRR kit in conjunction with key U.S. news leadership, and provide training on using this equipment and other security related trainings. This will involve travel across the U.S. and Central and South America, potentially with limited notice.
  • Engage with Global Real Estate and News leadership to ensure that all U.S. offices have security plans in place, including physical security plans, emergency management protocols, and updated resilience details.
  • Engage with GSRR strategy to lead on the delivery and development of key Resilience@AP initiatives, including programs supporting mental health and psychological resilience and online abuse response and prevention.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture that emphasizes strong digital hygiene, active engagement with cybersecurity training and awareness of emerging digital threats. Foster a newsroom environment where safety - both physical and digital - is embedded in daily practice, with tailored support provided to those most at risk.

We're looking for someone who will:

  • Draw upon experience working with and supporting journalists and the media. You're familiar with the types of threats or security concerns facing journalists today, both in the Americas and globally, as well as security principles and supporting crisis management practices.
  • Articulate an interest in political and cultural news and developments, particularly in the U.S., Canada and Latin America.
  • Thrive in a fast-paced environment, excelling at multitasking and working across time zones. This position will require travel within the U.S. and Latin America. The job will sometimes require pivoting quickly with the news cycle while completing work on time and within budget.
  • Offer clear, precise and measured safety guidance and advice to our journalists in the key pillars of our work (physical, digital and psychological safety), preferably with some background in responding to online abuse.
  • Represent the AP at key journalism and security networking events. Engage with a cohort to conduct benchmarking to ensure AP is an industry leader in best practices and new trends.
  • Work from the New York office or Washington bureau and outside of business hours as required, as the AP is a 24/7 operation, including joining in the GSRR weekend and holiday on-call rotation.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Strong knowledge of social media platforms and online protection tools.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including excellent verbal and written communication across cultures and quick responsiveness across time zones.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to juggle multiple projects.
  • A commitment to actively supporting a diverse, inclusive and equitable work environment.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English.
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. will be mandatory.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience working within news organizations, NGOs, or similar industries and sectors in a safety or security-related role; or demonstrable transferable knowledge.
  • Fluency in Spanish or Portuguese strongly preferred.
  • Experience as a program and/or training manager delivering safety or first aid training.
  • Experience supporting people during distressing or high-stress situations, and being a steady, compassionate presence when it matters most.
  • A proven ability to build strong partnerships and communicate effectively across all levels of an organization, from journalists in the field to senior leadership.

Application deadline is August 18, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. EST.

We'll consider strong candidates who do not meet every listed qualification. You may use a cover letter to describe the unique qualifications you would bring to this role.
