Organizational Unit Overview |
The School of Dental Medicine is composed of ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The Administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Academic Success and the Assistant Dean for Business Operations and Financial Affairs. The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry and Foundational Sciences.
Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the underserved population of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provides dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in both Ross Hall in Greenville, North Carolina, as well as Community Service-Learning Centers located throughout North Carolina. To operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed. |
Job Duties |
This position serves as the dental school's functional coding expert. Primarily, the role is expected to triage, review, and correct claims through a daily prospective audit. The coder communicates with, educates and guides students, providers and Business and Finance staff to optimize coding accuracy, facilitate proper reimbursement, and prevent future errors. The Coder also interfaces with
OII to assist in responding to external inquiries and audits, as well as to cooperate with any internal audits.
* For all claims which require correction, the Coder will communicate proposed changes to Faculty or students;
* Significantly, the coder is expected to educate providers and students daily, through the audit findings, on accurate coding and documentation to support delivered care;
* Education may also either occur from inquiries by providers or students, or be planned in advance for coding changes or to address patterns of high frequency errors across the practice;
* The Coder will support and advise the Director as to which types of codes and which providers should be included in the audit. The goal is that the audit have the greatest impact on documentary accuracy;
* In order to do so, the Coder will constantly reassess which claims included in the audit are having the greatest impact, which codes not presently audited ought to be included, and which providers either should be added to the audit or be audited more frequently;
* As the school's functional coding expert, the Coder is expected to stay current on all coding updates and relevant changes, to serve as the primary liaison to the Office of Institutional Integrity (
OII).

Employment in this position provides eligibility to participate in the

Minimum Education/Experience |
High school diploma or equivalency and one year of related office experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. |

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education |
CPC (Certified Professional Coder) or
CCSP (Certified Coding Specialist-Physician) or applicable coding certification. Prior experience with medical/dental coding is preferred.

In the absence of certification upon employment, all candidates must acquire a coding certification within one year of initial date of hire into a position requiring coding certification. Coding Certifications Recognized:
