About the Position:


As a member of the General Services crew, the General Services Worker performs small campus moves; surplus furniture and equipment pick up and disposal, general loading dock clearing, furniture inventory maintenance, moving bulk items, providing support for special University functions, and other duties as assigned. On a daily basis the crew members may be called upon to perform a variety of tasks at any of the three GMU campuses.


Responsibilities:


Daily Operations



  • On a daily basis, will be called upon to perform a variety of tasks at any of the three GMU campuses. Tasks may include but are not limited to:

    • Pickup and delivery of all types of equipment, furniture, storage, allocation, distribution, setup, assembly, making minor repairs, trash collection, grounds cleaning, collecting recycling material, and general warehouse tasks;


  • Other duties as may be assigned; and
  • Must be flexible and willing to work extra hours including weekends if required.


General Maintenance



  • Will assist the Lead General Services Worker in the completion of assigned tasks that need to be performed in conjunction with scheduled work orders;
  • These tasks shall include but will not be limited to:

    • Waste pick-up and hauling;
    • Policing litter on off-campus roads and University grounds;
    • Clearing/cleaning of loading docks; and
    • Assisting with recycling and other warehousing operations, etc.




Other Duties as Assigned



  • Performs other duties as assigned to maintain warehouse or facilities operations such as but not limited to inclement weather duty;
  • General Service support to departments, and university event support actions;
  • Provides outstanding customer service to both internal and external customers by considering how actions or plans will affect customers; follow through on responsibilities to customers;
  • Responds with appropriate urgency, flexibility, courtesy and good judgment to meet customer needs and resolve problems;
  • Identifies and initiates actions to support the mission and objectives, and to resolve or avoid problems;
  • Maintains high credibility to accomplish objectives;
  • Follows safety policies and procedures; identifies and corrects safety hazards;
  • Follows general university policies and procedures that are related to data stewardship and information technology security; and
  • Safeguards sensitive and confidential data both in electronic and physical forms.


Environmental Hazards



  • Works near moving mech parts;
  • Fumes, smoke, or airborne particles;
  • Hazardous materials;
  • Operates light/heavy equipment;
  • Outdoors environment;
  • Works in high place; and
  • Operates power tools/machinery.


Required Qualifications:



  • High School Diploma or equivalent;
  • Must be able to become certified in forklift operation; and
  • Must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator's license that meets all of GMU's requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason's Vehicle Use Policy 1411 https://universitypolicy.gmu.edu/policies/vehicle-use/. The Office of Risk Management reserves the right to review the driver's licenses and Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) of all candidates selected with employment contingent upon a favorable review.
