Position Title:Behavioral Health Tech II - Pediatrics Department:Safety Attendants Job Description:

General Description:

Under direct supervision of the Charge RN and Program Manager will utilize behavioral interventions, medical and technical skills to provide support to the patient care team.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Assists in identifying patients' problems, needs, and strengths.
  • Assists in providing treatment plan to patient based on observations of patient behavior and provides input into discharge planning.
  • Participates in implementing patients' treatment plan by monitoring patients' progress and communicates information regarding patient behavior to other members of the team.
  • Detects and identifies unsafe environmental conditions and patient behaviors.
  • Facilitates patients in therapeutic activities.
  • Monitors patients in clinical and medical therapies.
  • Monitors, engages in and promotes a safe patient milieu
  • Continuous monitoring of the therapeutic environment for safety concerns.
  • Assists RN in organizing and executing actions under the Emergency Response Plan.
  • Responds to emergency situations related to dangerous or potentially dangerous patient behaviors.
  • Restores and maintains a safe and secure environment by implementing measures under NCI.
  • Recognizes and reports adverse reactions to neuroleptic medications including Extra Pyramidal Symptoms, Tardive Dyskinesia, and Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome.
  • Facilitates therapeutic activities and conducts patient/family teaching including unit/program orientation, goals group, and wrap- up groups.
  • Assists patients in carrying out activities of daily living; such as hygiene needs that can include showering and toileting
  • Accompanies and transports patients
  • Takes/records blood pressures, temperatures, pulse and weighs patients
  • Performs blood glucose monitoring
  • Collects specimens as directed.
  • Reports symptoms and significant changes in patient's condition or behavior to RN
  • Assists with admission, discharge, and transfer process
  • Transports patients to and from various treatment areas within the hospital when necessary, assists transporters in moving patients in and out of stretchers and wheelchairs.
  • Keeps the patient's room in clean and orderly condition, makes beds, and replaces soiled linen.
  • Assists in restocking rooms with supplies and equipment as directed.
  • Duties may be performed for one patient or more than one patient
  • When assigned to one patient as a safety attendant (1:1 assignment), provides care, observes the patient and remains within 3 feet of the patient at all times with constant visual monitoring.
  • Intervenes with NCI during episodes of patient aggressive and potentially violent behavior causing risk of harm to self or other patients on the unit.
  • May assist with the training of other Behavioral Health Technicians
  • Completes annual NCI and behavioral health training modules

General Responsibilities:

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High school diploma or GED required.

Experience: 3-5 years of experience in a mental healthcare setting performing similar duties required.

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required: Current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association required upon hire. Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training required within 3 months of hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of human behavior and/or principles of psychology.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to emergency situations. Knowledge of Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI).
  • Ability to recognize and respond to adverse drug reactions.
  • Ability to work effectively in stressful situations.
  • Ability to work with others as a team to ensure quality patient care.
  • Basic knowledge of computer systems.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
