Plant Electromechanical Repairman

Purpose
Responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of the electrical components of a materials plant (aggregates, asphalt and ready-mix facilities).

New Hire Fit-for-Duty Test
  • For your safety, you will be required to undergo a new hire Fit-for-Duty Test prior to job placement.
The Fit-for-Duty test will include a physical examination and the following physical ability tests:

Lifting Tests:
  • Lift up to 50 lbs to your waist level
  • Lift up to 50 lbs to your shoulder level

Carry Test:
  • Carry 50 lbs
  • Carry 25 lbs up and down stairs

Climb Tests:
  • Climb stairs
  • Climb ladders

Other Tests:

Walking/Standing Test:
  • Stand and walk safely with good balance.
Stooping and Twisting Test:
  • Bend over and touch your toes while twisting several times.
Kneeling Test:
  • Kneel down and stand up several times.
Squat Test:
  • Squat and hold the squat position for 30 seconds.
Repeated Squat Test:
  • Squat down several times.

Return to Work Fitness-for-Duty Tests
  • Prior to return to work following an injury/illness or change in health or physical abilities, the employee will be required to undergo a fit-for-duty test.

Essential Functions and Tasks:
  • Monitoring- Continually monitors motor operation to assure proper operation of the crushers, conveyors, screens, pumps, etc.; checks bearings & conduits; 20- 90%/ week.
  • Troubleshooting - Responds to calls from supervisor or plant operator; investigates the breakdown & makes diagnosis of electrical or mechanical problems; estimates the extent of the repair needs; reports findings to electrical supervisor & to plant operator; uses electric meters during diagnostic phase; 5- 90% per week.
  • Repairs - Uses hand tools and power tools and testing equipment to perform a variety of electrical repairs, including: reset heaters, replace relays, motors & switches, repair conduits, PLC's (programmable logic controllers), signal lights, etc.; performs repairs on site or removes components for repair at the shop; work involves climbing stairs and ladders, using a lift, crawling into tight spaces and working at heights; 5-60% per week.
  • Installation - Installs electrical components of new equipment and removes and replaces broken or defective equipment; may include motors, pipes, fittings and motor control centers; runs power extensions for pipes and cords, as needed; uses crane, hydralift and service truck, as needed; may pour a concrete slab for a motor foundation; 20-40% per week.
  • Maintenance - Performs scheduled maintenance when plant is down; performs winter repair maintenance, as needed; checks equipment guards, cleans out motor control centers, checks motor contactors; 1-90% per week.
  • Housekeeping/ Clean-Off- Maintains work area in a clean and safe condition; picks up wiring, pipe, parts and packaging, as needed; sweeps and vacuums switch house, as needed; may help to shovel off an over-loaded conveyor; 2-5% per week.
  • Documentation - Records completed maintenance and safety-related repairs; researches and orders parts, as needed; records annual MSHA inspection results; records daily journal of work performed; may draw diagrams for installation; 2- 10%/ wk.
  • Drives Truck- Drives to all site locations; transports tools and materials; may drive offsite to pick up tools or supplies, if needed; may drive in for call backs, during off-hours; 5-10% per week.
  • Temporary Transitional Work - Employee may be required to engage in sedentary work and/or safety training as designated by employer.

Non-Essential Functions and Tasks:
  • Welding - Uses stick welding to fabricate brakes, struts and guards, as needed; 0-10% per week.
  • Operate Equipment - May operate construction equipment, if qualified, such as forklift, aerial lift, backhoe, tractor, bobcat, hydralift, crane, as needed for installation and repairs; 0-20% per week.
  • Operates Plant- If qualified, may run plant controls at pre-wash or rock plant, in absence of a Plant Operator; 0-40% per week.

Desired Qualification Standards

Education/ Training:
  • High School diploma or GED, required. Electrical trade school, helpful. First Aid/CPR Training.
Licenses/Certification:
  • HDR/Electrician Union Card, Journeyman status. Forklift, Ariel Lift, Crane, and First Aid/CPR Certification, Arc Flash training, preferred.

Experience:
  • Completion of 2-4 years apprentice program. Minimum 4 years electrical experience required.

Knowledge/ Skills:
  • Knowledge of 3-phase 480-volt circuits, single phase 120-240 volt circuits, knowledge of 12kv high voltage, Variable Frequency Drives, Programmable Logic Controllers; Ability to read and interpret schematics, read instrumentation, ability to troubleshoot, operate testing equipment; Read, write, speak English; Basic math skills, Good time management; Attention to details, Ability to multitask.

HOURLY BASE SALARY RANGE:
$55.90/hr
The range displayed reflects the range the company reasonable expects to pay for the position. The actual base salary is subject to variation due to the role, level, geographic location, relevant education, training, or experience, among other factors.
