Requisition Id15182

Overview:

The National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) provides state-of-the-art computational and data science infrastructure for technical and scientific professionals to accelerate scientific discovery and engineering advances across a broad range of disciplines. As an important part of the broader High-Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure, the division also hosts the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF), a Department of Energy Office of Science User Facility.

Members of the NCCS Science Engagement section, and especially members of the Algorithms and Performance Analysis (APA) group, work with NCCS users across a wide variety of computational domains to enable their efficient use of the world class facilities provided by the NCCS. We seek to hire a computer scientist specializing in techniques for scalable performance and energy usage optimization of software targeting high performance computing (HPC) systems. As a member of the Science Engagement section, the role involves balancing three major types of activities: liaising with users of NCCS computing resources including analysis and optimization of their software; service to the NCCS through activities like reviewing proposals requesting time on NCCS resources and evaluating potential NCCS software and hardware; and research in a field relevant to the Science Engagement section and the NCCS.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Work with NCCS users to help ensure they make productive use of their NCCS system allocations, including activities such as evaluating and optimizing the performance and energy usage of their software
  • Review proposals requesting allocations on NCCS systems for their computational readiness and possibly also scientific merit
  • Provide expertise to OLCF procurement activities and assist in capability planning for future OLCF procurements
  • Conduct performance and energy usage optimization research, disseminate results in journal articles and/or conference papers, and participate in development of research proposals
  • Participate in HPC community efforts that define requirements for system software, libraries, and tools to meet the needs of NCCS users

Basic Requirements:

  • A Ph.D. in applied mathematics, computer science, or computational science/engineering
  • 2+ years experience beyond Ph.D . in an applied mathematics, computer science, or computational science/engineering position with demonstrated experience developing or maintaining application software, libraries, or performance/debugging tools targeting HPC systems
  • Expertise developing, maintaining, or analyzing software targeting large-scale computational resources that involves numerical methods, parallel algorithms, inter-process communication and synchronization, and at least one traditional high performance computing programming language (Fortran or C++)
  • The ability to interface with, and potentially collaborate with, NCCS users on the users' software
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, organizational skills, and strong personal motivation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 4+ years relevant research experience beyond Ph.D
  • Experience with:
    • Energy usage monitoring and analysis tools and techniques for applications targeting HPC systems
    • Digital twins, especially of HPC systems
  • Development of performance portable software for scalable GPU-accelerated HPC systems using approaches like the Kokkos abstraction layer or OpenMP target offload
