Position Description

Must be accepted to the Basic Peace Officer Training Academy which includes instruction and training mandated by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. A cadet must attend scheduled classes and actively participate in programs of instruction. Duties involve timely completion of assignments, participating in classroom projects and discussions, and receive hands on training in various skills needed by entry level police officers. The Cadet is expected to make passing grades during the program and upon successful completion of the academy, obtain a Basic Peace Officer license from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.

Major/Essential Functions


  • Attend and satisfactorily complete the South Plains College Law Enforcement Police Academy within a twelve month period.
  • Attend police academy classes and participate in training and programs of instruction which are designed to qualify the employee for Basic Peace Officer Certification through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement
  • Participate in classroom discussions and group projects.
  • Develop skill and proficiency in the use and care of firearms.
  • Develop knowledge in the operation of two-way radios
  • Develop knowledge and proficiency in the interpretation of Federal, State, and Local laws and ordinances.
  • Participate in the defensive tactics training in order to learn proper techniques.
  • Participate and maintain they physical agility required by the South Plains College Law Enforcement Academy.
  • Be able to pass the written and physical requirements required by South Plains College Law Enforcement Academy standards.

Required Qualifications


  • Be at least 21 years of age.
  • Possess a college-level associate degree, if younger than 21.
  • Have no convictions for a Class A misdemeanor or felony offense.
  • Have no convictions for a Class B misdemeanor offense in the past 10 years.
  • Possess good mental and physical health.
  • Possess a valid Texas driver's license
  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Meet the minimum commissioning standards of the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement and be accepted into the South Plains College Law Enforcement Academy

Preferred Qualifications

Be 21 years of age by the time you complete and pass the South Plains College Law Enforcement Academy and pass the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement's state exam.
