Position Highlights

The Sonoran Center for Excellence in Disabilities at the University of Arizona is seeking a Transition Specialist to support youth to adult transition new and current projects across the center. This position will work in partnership with community stakeholders on activities focused on enhancing services, supports, and outcomes for underrepresented and under-served youth and young adults with disabilities, with special emphasis on indigenous, rural, foster care and justice involved populations. A major emphasis will be on creating workforce development opportunities to enhance the skills and competencies and build capacity for cultural responsive transition and employment services. The successful candidate will join a dynamic team of trainers, researchers, educators, practitioners, and scholars focused on inclusion for people with disabilities. This position will work closely with the Center's Circle of Indigenous Empowerment, Transition, and Employment First teams and be responsible for supporting development and implementation of transition and employment trainings, technical assistance and services, engaging new communities, as well as ensure implementation of innovative best practices, and developing resources in response to the identified needs of specific populations across the state. Work focus includes developing effective and culturally responsive strategies for serving Native youth, foster youth, and other under-served populations. Also, contributing to progress and annual reports highlighting accomplishments and outcomes, and providing direct services on community job sites for students with disabilities.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Co-lead the development and coordination of projects and activities with an emphasis on transition for underrepresented and under-served youth/young adults with disabilities, with special focus on indigenous, rural, foster care and justice involved populations.
  • Development and implementation of trainings and provision of technical assistance and support to enhance cultural competency and population specific approaches in the delivery of disability services.
  • Conduct outreach and develop partnerships with Native Nations and communities across Arizona.
  • Develop and disseminate products and resources in response to identified needs and requests.
  • Develop relationships and maintain communication with school sites, funding agency, and other partners; work closely with project director and keep informed of updates and concerns.
  • Disseminate information using multiple written and on-line formats including social media, presentations, newsletter articles, and webinars.
  • Participate in project planning meetings and state/national topical events.
  • Other activities as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience working with individuals with disabilities preferably in a education, community, vocational or employment setting.
  • Knowledge of instructional practices to teach, support, and accommodate individuals with a variety of disabilities.
  • Good interpersonal communication and teamwork skills.
  • Able to travel around the state with some overnights.
  • Utilizes effective system for organizing and coordinating tasks and schedules.
  • Belief and expectation that people with disabilities can work.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
