Job Description Summary:

Provides daily husbandry care and oversight for animals in support of research goals, ensuring their health and well-being. May be required to work weekends and holidays on a rotational basis.

Job Description:

Essential Functions:

  • Ensures adequate supply of feed, water, and clean bedding or housing for research animals. Performs cage changes of animal enclosures on a routine basis.
  • Monitors and documents animal health status, reporting observations to the research and veterinary staff.
  • Administers treatment of minor or common health issues as needed.
  • Cleans and maintains laboratory facilities and equipment on a routine basis.
  • Follows all protocols and procedures to ensure a safe environment and compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulations.

Education Requirement:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
  • Associate Degree, preferred.

Licensure Requirement:

Valid Ohio driver's license and proof of auto insurance as required by hospital policy and position-specific requirements. Must pass motor vehicle background inspection, insurance eligibility, driving qualifications, and training set forth by Nationwide Children's Hospital and maintain qualification of insurance guidelines.

Certifications:

ALAT or LAT certification, preferred.

Skills:

  • Working knowledge of federal animal welfare regulations and AAALAC accreditation standards.
  • Working knowledge of animal technician safety precautions.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Experience:

Two years of laboratory animal experience, required.

OCCASIONALLY: Biohazard waste, Blood and/or Bodily Fluids, Chemicals/Medications, Climb stairs/ladder, Communicable Diseases and/or Pathogens, Computer skills, Driving motor vehicles (work required) *additional testing may be required, Fume /Gases /Vapors, Lifting / Carrying: 21-40 lbs, Lifting / Carrying: 41-60 lbs, Lifting / Carrying: 61-100 lbs, Machinery, Patient Equipment, Pushing / Pulling: 100 lbs or greater with assistance, Pushing / Pulling: 41-60 lbs, Pushing / Pulling: 61-100 lbs, Sitting, Squat/kneel

FREQUENTLY: Bend/twist, Decision Making, Flexing/extending of neck, Hand use: grasping, gripping, turning, Interpreting Data, Lifting / Carrying: 0-10 lbs, Lifting / Carrying: 11-20 lbs, Problem solving, Pushing / Pulling: 0-25 lbs, Pushing / Pulling: 26-40 lbs, Reaching above shoulder, Repetitive hand/arm use, Walking

CONTINUOUSLY: Audible speech, Color vision, Depth perception, Hearing acuity, Peripheral vision, Seeing - Far/near, Standing
